Available stainless barrels?
« on: January 13, 2011, 06:36:48 AM »
I have a question about stainless barrels.  I know the factory offers a handful of them now but have there ever been other calibers offered?  Just curious if they are out there and if so how hard they are to come by.

H&R only makes one stainless rifle offering currently, the 45-70 Ultra Hunter, all the rest of the SS firearms have been discontinued.  :-\ They've been offered in 223, 22-250, 243, 270, 30-06 and 444 Marlin. One member has stated he had a 22 Hornet barrel, but I'm inclined to think it was a Handy Gun II which was electroless nickel, not SS. H&R may still have some stainless accessory barrels in stock tho, I'll see if I can find out.

I forgot about the Huntsman Kurt!!  ::) These SS accessory barrels are currently available, all are drilled and tapped for scope base, the only two that are still in production are the 444 and 45-70, when the others are gone, there likely won't be any more.

So no .308 stainless ever?  I have 223 and 270 on my frame now but a 308 would be the bees knees.

No one has ever reported a 308Win, but they may have made one, they made one SS Hornet that we know of.

My Hornet barrel and receiver are silver. I assumed they were stainless , but for all I know they could be elec. nickel. Is there an easy way to tell? I bought it at an auction used quite a few years ago and it came with a 20 guage barrel with the same bright finish. It also came with a black cordura type case that everything fits into.

If it was made before 1987, it's not stainless, what's the serial number prefix?

The prefix is NC. Kinda of a neat little package, although I've never even mounted the shotgun barrel.

That could very well be another stainless hornet if it's a factory fitted barrel, another member reported one, the barrel is marked SB2 like most modern barrels, yours makes two unless they made matte nickel barrels, his definitely looked stainless.
