My son get's blood on the 30/30 Handi
« on: January 15, 2011, 12:13:08 PM »
We got out early this morning, despite the blanket's attempts to keep me under wraps. It had been tough for Peyton this year and he still had the skunk on him going into this last weekend, which was only open for juveniles/kids. We had not seen any signs of movement this week in the area we hunt, so things were looking grim going in. We got in the tree around 6:30 and at about 7:30 this lone spike screwed up and walked out into a clearing about 50 yards away. Peyton made the shot right in the boiler room and he flopped. No tracking this one and we were checked in, ate breakfast, and home to hang him in the tree by 9:00. He shot it with a 150 grain Fusion and it left a really nice exit.

On the way out this AM, he said he prayed and prayed for God to give him a chance today. I told Him to have faith and take whatever God gave him. I thank Him now for answering it in an awsome way! He is so good and we should never forget that it's all in His time. There's allot of life lessons that can be learned in the woods and on the water, I encourage everyone to take time with their kids or someone elses even though it's not always convienant or comfortable thing to do...

God Bless,

Jon

Congratulations to Peyton...and to Dad!  I got to experience how a proud Dad feels when his son shoots a deer.  My experience was a first this year.

Way to go Peyton!  Don't forget to give your Dad an extra hug for taking you, even though he enjoyed it as much as you...

Ya both done good ;D

There's a lot of meat in what you say.  I'm a lot closer to God on the water and in the woods than I ever am in any of our churches around here.........sorry to say.  It's the solitude, time to think and meditate; to be able to sit and observe the little critters, and to thank God for the life he has given me.

Amen to what Pete said.  I refer to hunting as attending the first church of the pine tree, because that's what I usually climb.  I was with bith my sons when they got their first deer, nothing I will ever kill equals those moments.  Cherish these times, they pass in the blink of an eye.

I told you, he had gotten attached to that 30/30! He said yesterday, "I want to start collecting 30-30's dad. I want a bolt and lever action ones too. They're great for deer!" I thought, "O crap this is going to get expensive!"

Way to go young man. I guess you showed all those Magnum Heads and Speed Freaks that the old 30-30 will STILL take a deer. Persistence, patience and faith is way more effective than a 200 gr bullet @ 3000 fps that sleeps in, and this one picture is all the evidence we need. It does all of us good to look at the young man and hear his story and should keep us grounded in all of our hunts. Good job Dad for giving Peyton the opportunity to enjoy the last few days of the season and AWESOME job to the hunter who took care of business when finally given an opportunity. God Bless.
