$5,000 dollar Glocks for ATF???

First, sorry I cannot locate and post the article I saw in the Wichita paper a few days ago, maybe others can come up with something. Anyway, the article was about buying two Glocks for each BATF agent over the next ten years. From the amount of total money being spent according to the article and the number of agents to benefit according to the article, it comes out to $5,000 a pistol! Guess we have forgot the $600 hammers, toilet seats, etc. from the past or am I missing something here?

That sounds about right. The costs include the cost of the engineering team that needs to evaluate the specification, etc. It's a lot more than just the guns themselves. Minneapolis has a public bicycle program where you can rent a bike using your credit card at a kiosk. Few people use them $3000 per bike. The are bikes that would cost about $100 at walmart.

That would be about $8,000 per gun.





Second, it is an IDIQ (Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity) contract, meaning they don't know exactly how many or when they will buy.

In the final result, there is no way to tell what the exact price per unit is that the ATF is paying.

More wasted money on an unconstitutional agency. Defund them and roll them into the border Patrol.

Glocks for cops are about as standard as it gets. Unless they ask for some specific serial numbers or some agency name on them I can't imagine what "special" they could have requested.

I suspect that the contract includes several extra magazines per gun plus parts support and perhaps armorer training for some number of folks to support the guns. It might even include holsters.

What I also suspect is that the $40 million isn't necessarily the price of the 5000 guns initially or even with the added support I've mentioned but rather is a max price the contract can cover should more guns or support be required under it. I don't think you can just divide the number of agents times two into the dollar figure and get a per unit cost.

I'm just about certain they aren't paying more than you or I would for what they get and likely less due to the volume. Being a former federal employee and a mid level manager I'm quite sure there are a lot of undisclosed paragraphs in that contract the public will never see that if we could would explain the apparent over pricing. The feds are not very forthcoming with details and these days far less so than in my time as a federal civil service employee.

They are so macho that instead of using a three hole punch they just shoot the holes in the paper instead.

There just isn't money in federal budgets like there used to be. You really have to be careful how you spend them dollars. The bean counters are all over contracts etc. This purchase most likely required a sole source justification, since there are other manufactures who produce high quality firearms also. As Mr. Greybeard stated there is parts of the contract that isn't public information (which is very true of most govenrment contracts), it could be for things like supressors, and add on gear like flashlights and laser sights. Extra magazines, repair parts and armorer repair times arre figured in also. Back in the 70s and 80s money flowed like water. It doesn't any more. If you get caught wasting money, most likely you will be headed out the gate without your pention.

Nope not sticking up for the ATF, it would be fine by me if they were just the AT keeping the F out of our lives. (pun intended)
