Talo Trapper Trifecta
« on: January 16, 2011, 05:58:38 AM »
I just ordered the last in the Talo Trapper Trifecta. I had already purchased the 45/70 and .357, but now the .44 mag. is on it's way. Davidson's didn't have any of them for a while so when I saw they were once again available I jumped on it. I'm planning on trying 320gr. Cast Performance bullets if they'll fit the chamber. I had used them in a Marlin 1894 in the past and I've never seen a more spectacular whitetail kill. I hit a buck broadside with this load and saw blood spray out the off side and pouring out both sides as he dropped where he stood.

That does sound like a Perfect Trifecta! Please let us know how they shoot, it would be interesting to see if that bullet will chamber.

Thanks, Dinny

I have a few loaded already so I can try them before I order more. I had sent most of the 320gr. bullets to a friend in TN. when I sold my 1894. I have some 270gr Speer GDs and Horn. 265gr. FN bullets to try also.

Nice!  I just sent a receiver to H&R to hopefully get a Talo 45-70 barrel mounted to.  I also plan to order a 357 Talo from my local gun store tomorrow.

Post some pics if you get a chance.

thanks,
-Kyle

Guys, listen to your old uncle Pete and Maxi those .357s...You'll never look back.  Believe me.

The .44 wouldn't mind growing up to be a .445 either.

Don,

Take a look at the Oregon Trail 44 Cal 310 grain LWNFPGC.  The meplat is so wide it borders on being a full wadcutter.  They work great out of the H&R 444 Marlin/410 slugger at lower speeds so should work with your 44 Mag.  Congrats on the trifecta, you must be a lot younger than me because if I had three identical looking guns I would always have the wrong ammo with me. :P

LOL!! I could see that happening! I use those butt stock shell holders on most of my Handis. It keeps me from feeling old knowing I have the right ammo.

I picked up the .44 trapper today and ordered an EGW scope base for it. One look at the blurred sights told me to order the scope base. No sense fooling myself any further.

I just picked up my Talo Trapper in 357 today!

This short barrel sure is "handi"!

Big Blue ,

Mine is drilled and tapped for a scope rail, but it didn't come with either the rail or the hammer spur.  Has this been your experience?

thanks,
-Kyle

There isn't anything Handier than a short Handi.  I've got a 16.5 inch Maxi, a 18 inch .38-55 (thanks again, Tim) and the standard .45LC.  They all swing and sing.  My .445 is getting bobbed to 18 inches pretty soon, and da tirty tirty and da 7.62x39 are gonna follow quickly.  I'm sold on the Handi Handis..

Ok Guys, help me learn something new.  Other than the shortened barrel, what makes a Handi a Talo?  My search results haven't taught me very much so it is time to ask the masters.  Thanks

I am pretty sure that I want one of these.

I got around to cleaning the factory oils off my gun this evening and noticed some internal markings I've never seen before.  Are these new?  Are they related Talo?

I just found it interesting.

Probably a foundry marking when the frame was cast, my SB1 Superlight Compact 44mag has a 4 on the left, and \ on the right.

The SB1 Talo Trapper 357 and 44 mags had palletwood stocks and 18¾" barrels with sights, unlike the current production synthetic stocked 22"(and 20") without sights. They haven't been in production for over a year.

Only because they come with a short barrel and sights, lots of short barrel and iron sight lovers here, so getting one factory done the way they used to come was nice, they sold new for $250ish, I paid $275(IIRC) for an SB2 45-70 Trapper earlier this year.

You can do the same thing by cutting off a standard Handi and adding open sights. The stock Handi sights suck anyway... you're better off adding a good ramp front sight with your choice of insert and a WGRS rear sight. That way you'll have your short barrel Handi and decent sights... then it will be a handy Handi. ;)
