New Ruger Super Blackhawk 7.5"
« on: January 16, 2011, 09:30:14 AM »
I know all guns are individual but trying to find a good starting point/points to find the most accurate factory ammunition for this revolver. Will purchase and try several but would like to hear what others have had luck with for this particular revolver. Any experiences and input would be appreciated. ;)

Once upon  a time , I used Federal 240 SP ( I think ) for hunting and Magtech for practice...worked well for me.  It gets awfully expensive shooting factory stuff.  If your going to hunt, ya have to practice, a lot.  If ya don't reload, maybe find someone to load for you...that would save ya a bunch of cash....ya gotta practice.  good luck

No truer words spoken!  Thank God for the wonderful world that is reloading.  Without it I am not sure I could afford this hobby too well and I certianly would do a heck of a lot less shooting, thats for sure!

You can get into reloading with the Lee stuff for less than 150 dollars. At 30 dollars a box for 44 magnum, thats 5boxes. Bumble Bee cast bullets will cost you about 35 dollars for 500. (bumblebeecastbullets@aol.com is the email on their card, they said at the gun show they will ship them USPS flat rate, which is still a steal even including shipping) Figure 9 cents each for bullets. Brass gets reused, assume 10 times,so figure 3 cents each. 3 cents per primer and  about 6 cents for powder (depending on the powder,Ive been using Accurate 5 which about half that but I hate it because its so fine and I'm just trying to use it up).  Thats 21 cents each or $10.50 per box of 50. So at a savings of 20 dollars per box,you break even for your reloading gear after you make 7 boxes of ammo.
If you cast your own bullets you can bring them in for around 3 cents each if you really try and if you use a powder that requires lighter loads you can shave a few cents there, getting it down to around 3 cents each and bring it in for around $6.00 for 50. If you find a source of brass, such as if you have friends that don't reload that shoot 44 magnum, you can shave that off too, and bring it in for $4.50 for a box of 50. If you search around,Ive seen Tula large pistol primers at gun shows for $20 for 1000,so thats 2 cents per primer and brings it to $4.00 for 50.

(Now all I need to do is find someone to pay for my primers and powder and Ill be set  ;D )

I do wonder how that cheap Rex powder would work. They don't have loads listed for 44magnum though, but looking at how much is used in a 45acp,It looks like it would cost around 1.5 cents to load a 44magnum. That would be $3.25 for a box of 50!

My 7.5 inch SBH loved the cheap 240 grain white box HP & SP. I moved up to more expensive ammo (Speer & Win Supreme,) and it didn't work as well. For deer hunting I wouldn't bother with the supreme ammo, it's not needed. My 5.5 inch BH didn't group well with either ammo.

My 7.5 also seems to prefer the cheap stuff.

I will start with Remington 180 JSP and Hornady 240 XTP and see how the gun likes these. These two seem to get alot of positive remarks from different 44 mag super blackhawk owners. I probably will end up trying to replace the rear sight with an aperture type because of my aging eyes.

Bought some 240 grain Winchester JSPs and Remington UMC 180 JSPs and tried them off a bench at 25 yards today. Typical best sample groups........The 240s went (5) rounds into a 2 1/2" with (3) rounds into 1". The 180s went  (4) rounds into an inch (3) rounds into 3/4" and the 5th  round (my bad) stretching the group to 2 1/4". The 180s shot consistently tighter groups. Just getting started, but very pleased so far, especially with the Remington UMCs. ;D
On a side note.........I shot my 6" GP 100 with some 158 grain Monarch ammo (Academy) also. It would shoot (5) rounds into 1 1/2" consistently at same distance.  :o

I have had excellent results with Mag Tech 240 gr JSP.  This is what I shoot in the off season.  I have shot a lot of it with no problems.  You can find it on the web if you can't find it locally.  My favorite deer hunting ammo is Black Hills 240 gr JHP (XTP).  My Ruger revolvers love this stuff and it offers some expansion on broadside double lung shots.
