Brazen coyote pays with its life.

This coyote has been coming in and along our yard several times in the last couple of weeks. About 3:15 this afternoon it was walking across our frozen pond that is behind our backyard. I grabbed the Savage .243 with scope set on 4X, rested my hand against the door stop to our deck and fired. 155 paces.

I think it was young and dumb. By the size and looks of its teeth it was a young female. She appeared to be very healthy. There are plenty of rabbits, mice and rats around as my cats bring me their "catches" almost everyday and I see a lot of rabbits. During the last couple of weeks what I am guessing to be the same coyote, she had been up next to my deck at dawn and then during the daytime she has crossed my backyard and been spotted a couple of time along the fence line on my west yard boarder. Our house has been there for over five years and the coyotes have not had  any hunting pressure so I think she was just getting too used to things.

I would guess she was more interested in your cats than rats and mice in your yard. Cats don't last long around here. If I or my Jack Russel don't get them, the coyotes do. They (coyotes) occasionally mark my driveway as part of their territory. I think they like to harass my Jack Russell, and yes, coyotes are getting more comfortable in semi-rural, and even town environments. Little dogs, and cats are a buffet favorite for coyotes.
Squirrels are taking over my neighborhood, because many of my moronic neighbors are too civilized to realize that they are destructive to home, and feed the damn things. I personally CB cap them, and use them as dog food, although the are pretty good eatin for human consumption.

My cats have had a 100% survival rate so far since I moved to the country. That is much better than when I lived in city where between loose running dogs and the cats not looking both ways before crossing the street I lost several cats.

there are about 15 ferel cats that are around here and the yotes do not seem to bother them even the ones i get and add to the bait pile seem to rot and not get eaten.

Don't know what to tell ya. My neighbor has witnessed two of his wife's expensive cats being carried off by coyotes in broad daylight. I am careful not to celebrate until I am out of his, and her sight.
Cats climb on cars, crap in flower beds, and the toms spray in garages. I cannot heap enough praise on cat killing coyotes, and dogs, and a few neighbors with traps and guns. Cars also are a boon against the cat expansion. They kill cats without prejudice, and have excellent ergonomics for the task. Long live the cat slayers. ;D

Each to their own Dee concerning cats. At least none of my cats killed a neighbor's dog or any of their livestock as some dogs will sometimes do.

I wish a coyote would get my neighbors cat.  I know I have been tempted on more than one occasion.  Darn cats pee all over the place.

I don't like roaming and destructive dogs or cats. If a person likes his dog or cat, keep him at home. Most dog owners do, but most cat owners think it's ok to release their cat to roam the neighborhood. It isn't! Cats, and only cats carry two diseases in their feces that are extremely hard to diagnose, and one is fatal. Doctors around here say that because of free roaming cats, wild, and domesticated, gardeners should wear protective gloves because of this. If you love'em keep'em up and every thing is good. If their allowed to roam, their at risk.

i am not sure about other states but in michigan there is a leash law for dogs
but no restriction for cat owners. they get to roam freely  ??? ???

I solve the garage thing by leaving out a bowl of antifreeze in my garage. Kills cats dead! My dog is well trained and will not leave his yard or touch anything but his own food unless I tell him it is ok.

The old type anti-freeze is one of the best rat and mouse killers there is. Before my big barn blew down I had made a trap using anti-freeze at the bait. Its real sweet and tasty you know   ;)  Anyways, my 5 gallon bucket was at least 1/4 full of dead mice   ;D

Now that's funny about the anti-freeze!!!  My favorite skunk killer, er deterent was canned cat food drenched in
the stuff.  We have coyoties here but never once got the drop on one.  We don't have enough yet around my place that I can recognize them instantaneously and by the time I do, they are gone.  I'm from NE PA and I know
yotes are all around, but my 112lb Golden Retriever won't tolerate them in his yard.  He's never off his leash ever
but you can tell he gets upset when he's "remarking" his area.  I'm sure my 25lb Cairne/Scotty mix won't be too
friendly to them either if he ever sees one.
