remington model 4 accuracy problems
« on: January 17, 2011, 09:08:53 AM »
I have a model 4 in .270 I bought new when they first came out. It has been an outstanding deer rifle for medium ranges where i hunt in MS. It has never been a tack driver but since the forearm split and i replaced it last year, it is now grouping -+ 8" at 100yds. Any suggestions of things to try to solve this problem will be appreciated. Going to start with checking the scope mount, rings, and different scope I have first. If that is not the problem, then I need some help. Thanks.

The only thing you have changed is the forearm.  I would check the fit of the forearm before doing anything else.  Some Remington semi autos have poor fitting forearms that really affect the accuracy.  I would first check the fit of the rear of the forearm to the action - square the back of the forearm for a proper fit - if you feel there is too much space between the forearm and action then you may need to bed it.  Then check the fit of the forearm to the barrel and make certain there is nothing (spacer, etc.,) impacting the barrel that will throw off your shots as the barrel heats up.  Finally, if the forearm attaches to the barrel by a screw you may wish to consider using a lock washer to tighten the forearm to the barrel without putting any stress or tension on the barrel, which will cause it to pattern.  Hope this helps.
