My first Hog hunt!!!!! Ammo advice
« on: January 18, 2011, 03:34:42 AM »
I'm going out on my first hunt this March in Eastern Tn. and was wondering if I could get in on this wealth of knowledge here. I am shooting a 30-06 with 180 gr. bullets. I am a benchrest shooter and can put-em where I want given the opportunity. What bullet TYPE is the best recomendation in the 180 gr. weight. Thanks to all, Jim

You will learn more about hog hunting from this one link than anywhere else!

http://www.texasboars.com/anatomy.html

Most people think a hog should be shot behind the shoulder like a deer when using a firearm but this article shows otherwise.  Having shot shoulder or forward of the shoulder, I can agree that it puts them down with much more certainty.

Have fun, shoot well and enjoy your hog hunt.  I hope this is helpful.

With accurate shot placement in 30-06 nearly any 180 bullet will work, except for a FMJ.   Good luck.

This a behind the shoulder shot, 50 yds 30-06 Remington Core Lokt 165 gr sp.  Behind the shoulder is fine with that caliber on wild feral hogs.  The picture is of the bullet entrance side.  Note the tissue that was expelled.

You'll be fine with your bullet choise.
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

Bullet types include the NOSLER PARTITION (prefer), Speer SP; Hornady SST, BTHP, or GMX; or a Cast boolet.  If it has the potential to punch through bone, hide and both sides to leave a good blood trail (just in cast it is not DRT), then that bullet will do the job.  With your bench skills I am certain, notwithstanding big game YIPES, that you will most certainly succeed.  If the bullet shoots well out of your rifle, your success is nearly assured, provided the game participates.
