Opinions of Lothar-Walthar Barrels?
« on: January 18, 2011, 04:25:02 PM »
I am thinking of rebarreling a Ruger #1 and my gunsmith recommended a Lothar-Walthar Barrel. I have had now knowledge of them.  Are they good bad or what?

Thanks,

bigboar

HI.  I googled Lothar Walther barrels and everyone raves about them.  Two things come up: (1) They're very accurate and (2) they're easy to clean.

I would go with one.

Better tube than the current factory one for sure.  Would it be number one on my list...probably not though.

Krieger or Bartlein for cut rifled, Broughton for button rifled.  That does not mean that there aren't a dozen more manufacturers that produce quality barrels.  I'm not saying that Lothar-Walther doesn't make a quality barrel either.

I have a Lother Walther on a custom Titanium Mauser. The builder wouldn't of used Lothar Walther on them if He didn't think that they were top of the line.

They are good barrels, there aren't too many bad aftermarket barrel makers out there.  I think you might be reading into what I've said too much.  I've used Broughton and Krieger, and have a couple of buddies that have run Bartleins.  I also have a couple of buddies that run Shilens with good results.  I've played with a rebarreled 300WM 700P that had a Hart tube on it, shot great as well.  I've also got a chance to shoot a couple of Pac-Nors, and one Rock Creek barreled rifle, none of which shot bad at all.  A lot of other factors go into accurate rifles after the barrel.  Action truing, bedding, trigger and stock rigidity/ergonomics all have some say in it as well.  If you get a good gunsmith they should be able to get most any aftermarket barreled rifle to shoot well.  My last rebarrel/action job was done by Ray Bowman who swears by Broughtons, and he's built some F-class record holders with them.  Most good gunsmiths have their preferences as do shooters.

You really can't go wrong with a L-W, I'm just saying that I'd prefer others...maybe its because of what I've seen win matches.

What cal are you going with??  L-W are very smooth and easy to clean.  If you are going with a 22 or 30 cal I'd recomend the polygonal rifling.
I only have 1 L-W barrel, it is on a 50 BMG

I have been useing Lothar Walther barrels for over fifteen years.  My customers love them. Their steel is custom made (LW50) by Krupp steel in Germany.   Give them a call Woody (the head honcho) will answer the phone.  Bery nice & VERY knowledgeable man.
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I've never had a LW barrel.  I've said this before I spread my barrels around so I don't get locked into just one manufactor.  Gunsmith has a Rock Creek and Kreiger barrel for acouple projects and my next one maybe Bartlein/Rock.  I've had real good luck with Lilja barrels  gunsmith just finished a 222mag with one of his barrels.  I've only used Broughton 5c barrel on one rifle and I've got one with the new Kreiger 5r.  I had a Hart put on my #1 tight neck 6ppc and I used cut barrels for my #1's in 22Br and 30-338mag.

Right now Rock Creek and Bartlein 5r barrels are pretty nice not sure of the wait on either.  I've always like the idea I can also call(or do a 3way with gunmsith) and talk to the barrel guys maybe call the bullet guys find out what twist is best with what bullets want to use etc.

Well good luck
