1864, Laredo, Texas. Assigned to Colonel Rip Fords regiment, ___?___ found border duty tedious, and when off-duty he opened a monte game. One night, he and his brother___#___, also a member of Fords troops, played against a group of Mexican soldiers, who proceeded to lose their pay and sidearms to the gringos. By 2:00 A.M., the Mexicans were growing restive, and ___?___ whispered to his brother to go and arm himself.
Lieutenant Martino Gonzales soon appeared, declared the game closed, and demanded that ___?___ return the guns. ___?___ refused, whereupon Gonzales went for his gun, and a player named Miguel Zertuche jammed his pistol against ___?___ s chest and pulled the trigger. The gun misfired, and ___?___ shot Zertuche in the head, then whirled and pumped a slug into Gonzales chest. ___?___ darted out the door and dove into a pool outside.
