Cooper Custom Rifles Opinions
« on: January 21, 2011, 12:57:40 AM »
I'm looking fo a new rifle for hunting and paper punchin. I'm a benchrest shooter so accuracy is a must. I've heard these rifles are about the most accurate rifles out of the box and look quite good also.Anybody have any reviews or helpful info? Thanks in advance, Jim

Accurate...yes.  Can you compete in a smaller benchrest match with one...probably.  Are they a true benchrest rifle...no.

IMO they are a very beautiful rifle as well.  Don't get fooled by the test targets that they show though, those targets are not fired at 100yds (something like 47yds IIRC).  I've yet to see a Cooper though that couldn't hold solidly under MOA with a good load and shooter (not saying that there isn't a lemon or two out there though).

Beautiful rifles, great workmanship, MADE IN USA, available in lots of calibers and left hand configurations.  And they are accurate.
Yeah, I'm a rifle looney

I really want one in 250savage. But I've got hospital bills to pay right now.

I've been looking at that caliber, too.  The problem is that I have (2) .257 Roberts already.   :-\

I emailed them (Cooper) quite a while back with a question on an option... and they NEVER got back to me.... I like to buy US made stuff, but a Vanguard sub-moa is looking better all the time.  Now am I to understand that those pretty test targets are only done at 47 yds??? Bob

I bought two Coopers last year when local dealers had (rare) sales on them. Both mine in varmint cal's. came with ragged-hole test targets; have heard about the 47 yard range, but prefer to believe their "less than half-inch group with 'match-grade' factory ammo" pledge - mine did exactly that, as I'm still breaking them in and haven't handloaded for them yet. Most of their centerfires are single-shot, if that's an issue; however their new Model 54 short-action repeater looks tempting, but it's more $. First Stop Guns is a good place to buy; you can also check out some of their large selection on www.gunsamerica.com.
Some owners have complained of bolt durability problems, and some of the newer wood might not be the quality it once was. But when you consider the cost of upgrading/customizing a "generic" rifle and compare it to the price of a Cooper, the Cooper starts to look like a bargain (but don't tell them that - they might raise prices!)
