Vaquero Modification
« on: January 21, 2011, 04:03:29 AM »
I dropped a pair of Super Blackhawk hammers into my matched pair of .44-40 Vaqueros a night or two ago.  If you like to shoot one handed, I'd highly recommend the modification.  It's cheap, parts are drop in fits, and they make pulling that hammer back one handed so much easier. :)

I'm sorry...that was rude of me :)

Top gun has a Super Blackhawk hammer.  Bottom gun has standard Vaquero hammer.

Left gun has a Super Blackhawk hammer.  Right gun has standard Vaquero hammer.

Overhead shot of Super Blackhawk hammer.

Nice!
Being a newcomer to Rugers:
This is for the 'old' model Vac., not the NMBH/Vac. series, right?
How about the Montado hammer into the NMs, should be similar to what you have done here?

The pictured guns are "old" Vaqueros...the large framed ones.  The ones with the Eagle checkered Gunfighter grips are .44-40s (non-consecutive pair).  The ones with the elk stag grips are .45 Colt (again, non-consecutive pair)

I have converted a set of the New Vaqueros.  I bought a consecutive set of Montados with 3 1/2" barrels when they first came out, and liked them.  Now I've gone back and put Super Blackhawk hammers in the consecutive set of KNV (Stainless New Vaqueros) revolvers I've had since they came onto the market.

That makes a total of four guns I've converted...two New Models and two "old" models.  The Montado hammers are checkered, where the SBH hammers are grooved...otherwise they appear pretty much the same.

Interesting.......I'm liking this idea.
Now, where do I get either hammer and how much?

At this time, the Montado hammers are available from Ruger only...and I think they are back ordered.  The SBH hammers are available from Brownells and Midway for around $30.00 plus shipping.

Brownell's says "Hammer, only"...but don't let that fool you.  It's the complete hammer assembly, including the hammer plunger, plunger spring and plunger cross pin.
