45LC/45ACP
« on: January 22, 2011, 12:52:38 PM »
How does the 45acp work in a convertable model when the original handgun is 45LC?...

How do the rimless 45acp stay in the cylinder?  A moon clip?...

I never gave this a thought until today.  I have a Blackhawk in 45LC, but I have not intentions of using it for 45acp, if that is even possible...

Baffled a bit...

In the case of the Ruger BH and a few others , what you have to do is swap out cylinders , just like the Ruger Single Six 22LR / 22 Mag .

This applies to single action guns with a loading gate , for double action guns with a swing out cyl. a full moon or 2 - 1/2 moon clips are needed to hold the case's in place to head space most of the time .

And them some dbl action guns are made to be 45 ACP Only and have the cyl made so as to HS on the case mouth like their suppose to .

Hope this helps .

O.K.  I know the cylinders must be changed on the BH...

But what holds the case in place in the chambers as there is no rim?...

Is if just that the case headspaces on the case mouth and that is all that holds it in place?...

It would seem that a bit of give or take in each direction could lead to misfires because of light pin hits?...

Am I heading in the correct direction?...

stimpylu32 is correct but to simplify it all 45 ACP cylinders made current or for many,  many,  many and many years more headspace on the case mouth just like the 45 auto does.
In the RBH the 45 acp cylinder headspaces on the case mouth as does the Smith and Colt.
The clips just aid sloppy (sometimes) headspace and facilitates extraction due to the rimless design of the cases in doub;e action guns

yup like stimpy said, the blachawk uses a seperate cylinder for the 45 acp. it headspaces on the case mouth like he said ,so there is no need for moon clips.that reminds me i need to try out the acp cylinder for my blackhawk tomorrow maybe and see how it shoots.

Your going to have to give Ruger a call on this one , they may make a drop-in cyl. or they may need to bulid one for it , you also have to look at the cyl timing issue to make sure the chambers align with the barrel .

If a guy has a lot of ammo in .45ACP and/or already loads for an autoloader in it then I could see having that cylinder or a revolver chambered the same.
Otherwise, you can make any sane load level you want in that LC case.

That is true up to a point.  The beauty of the 45 ACP cylinder is that the case has a much smaller capacity than the 45 Colt and small charges are not sloshing around in the case.
As witness the CBA shooters using the 45 Schofield cases at times in the 45 Colt.
Whether you want to believe it some powders are position sensitive and gives much velocity variation.
Titegroup doesn't suppose to be position sensitive but I haven't ran a test on it yet but I will as soon as the weather lets up.
Bullseye seems okay.
The small case does have some advantages though.
I have a  Jerry Michelek (sp) 45 ACP Smith and love it.  I don't have to bend over to pick up the brass.  I still am shooting 45 ACP.  Still a revolver.   I have four 45 Colts in Rugers plus a S&W Mountain gun in 45 Colt.
The 45 ACP in revolver is very nice too.

Have owned a BH 45/45acp convertable and a Smith 45 ACP revolver. I forget the model, maybe a 25-2. Both were a hoot to shoot the ACP's in. I reloaded them then with some 200 gr SWC's that I had cast over 7.0 gr of Unique for about 1000 fps. Pleasant to shoot, accurate and could kick butt if you needed them to.

Years ago I bought a Ruger New Model Blackhawk convertible in 45 Colt/45 ACP with a 5 1/2" barrel. The 45 ACP cartridges head space off the case mouth since moon clips cannot be used in a single action revolver. I don’t own another 45 ACP pistols, I hand load for it and its proven to be very fun and accurate.

If someone is looking for a 45 ACP cylinder for their Ruger New Model Blackhawk in 45 Colt, I am not sure that Ruger would sell just the cylinder on its own, but I know they would need the revolver in order to fit the cylinder properly.

I suggest buying a Ruger New Model Blackhawk convertible in 45 Colt/45 ACP which would be cheaper and faster. Also Ruger convertible cylinders have the last three serial numbers etched on each cylinder for the revolver they belong too. Before I buy another convertible I would make certain these cylinder are actually made for the revolver, because some people buy the 45 ACP cylinders from others that sell them outright, but these may not be properly fitted to the revolver.

shot my black hawk convertible today for the first time with 45 acp.accuracy was about the same as the 45 colt cast boolit loads but was a couple inches high and a couple inches to the left.at 25 yrds.this was just a couple cylinders full of each. i was pretty happy with this test but it appears id have to readjust the sites to use the 45 acp.alltho either one would be plenty good for a deer at 50 yrds.

A 45Colt revolver works fine with a 45ACP cylinder.  It ejects with the rod, not an extractor, so needs no moon clip.  Note that the auto pistol also headspaces on the case mouth, not on the extractor (hopefully).

Ruger will not fit a convertible cylinder to a revolver that was not originally made as one.  Ruger will fit a replacement for a lost cylinder, if it originally came with one.

A gunsmith can fit an ACP cylinder if you can find one, and some gunsmiths will make one from a cylinder of a smaller caliber by boring and rechambering.

VTIgunparts.com has 45ACP cylinders to fit Uberti's SAA ($110), 1875 and 1890 Remington ($115) and Pietta GW!! ($130), and Colt ACP cylinders are available if you search the auction sites.

I sent my Bisley back to Ruger and had a 4 5/8 barrel fitted to it and an ACP cylinder.  Since then I have not put back on the LC cylinder.  The ACPs shoot fantastic out of it.  So much so I sent it to Magnaport and had a 10 degree forcing cone installed and it magnaported.  One gun that will NEVER leave the collection.

most times the cylinder will drop right in but sometimes not. Theres enough variation in the frames of ruger guns that once in a while you get one with a frame opening a bit to big or small. I guess ive never seen a need for it. I can load down 45 colts to any power level a acp can be loaded down too and you have to be very carefull with your crimps in an acp cylinder to insure that they have reliable primer strikes and you also have to deal with the long jump into the rifling. I know with creative loading you can overcome these things and my buddys gun shoots real well with them but to me its not worth fooling with.

I measured my 45 Colt cylinder with a pair of calipers and bought a cylinder on line that was .008 longer than my 45 Colt. With a piece of 220 grit laid on a sheet of glass for an extremely flat surface, I slid the boss towards me keeping the cylinder flat and measured after every stroke. After a few minutes, my 45 ACP cylinder fit fine and has been working fine ever since. The cylinder cost me less than 90 bucks to my door. After I buy my gun, I try to stay away from Ruger.
