Is there a 50 cal cap and ball?
« on: December 17, 2003, 05:11:50 PM »
I was wondering if there is a 50 cal cap and ball revolver?

This would be a great hunting revolver, and might even be legal in the great Hoosier State!  What a back up gun this would be during muzzle loader season.

Does any manufacture offer such a critter?

The only cylinder large enough to bore out to 50 would be the Ruger OLd Army.  Of course, the Dragoons, but they wouldn't be a good choice.  Might be an interesting project.

I just learned that the requirement for my state is that it be a muzzle loading handgun...the traditional cap and ball revolver will not qualify.

This would be an interesting revolver.

Thanks for your interest.

Anyone care to hazard a guess on the ballistics of the .50 C&B revolver? I think it is an interesting concept. But I am wondering what it will do out the muzzle end?

Imagine a .50 caliber percussion revolver built on the BFR frame from Magnum Research (www.magnumresearch.com). Sort of a modern Walker, weighing 4.36 pounds with a 10 inch barrel. The cylinder is long enough to chamber a .47-70 cartridge, so you could really pack a lot of loose fffg in there. Only trouble is, the guns go for around a thousand bucks.

I just visited this web site---www.centurymfg2002.com--- and these folks build a .50-110 revolver! Delete the loading gate and the ejector housing, modify the hammer and fit a percussion cylinder and you'd have one awesome c&b hunting gun. And just think of the bragging rights!
