22-250 Mod 70 accuracy
« on: January 23, 2011, 03:17:14 AM »
I just acquired Winchester MOD 70 sporter varmit in 22 250 and was wondering what kind of accuracy I can expect to get out of this rifle once I work up a hand load for it? The rifle is in mint condition and was made in the New Haven plant.I don't know the year of manufacture but the serial number starts with G2048xxx.The rifle has less than 100 rounds of ammo through it to date.Any help as to accuracy or date of manufacture would be a big help. Thanks

If it`s an older one it probly has a slow twist and will be most accurate with liter bullets. I would try some 50 and 55 gr. bullets and go with the 55`s if they are better of the same. Also play with the seating depth of the bullets. I have also found that the Sierra 52 and 53 gr. match bullets work very good in the 22-250, and at they are very good varmint bullets at 250 velocities.

Thanks for your reply Catfish.I went to the range today with my first hand loads.55gr V max and h380 powder. All 5 shot groups were MOA at 100yrds or less. One group measured 1/2MOA with 37gr ,first shot out of group, but that was the first cold bore clean barrel.I think I will keep it.
