Has something changed?

Larry

Only the short actions were missing the threads and I only heard about it on one caliber but the way I look at the pictures, it looks like Remington was threading new threads on their barrels for the nut. Ehh, doesn't matter anymore anyways. Cheap is cheap and you get what you pay for.

if they start putting rem barrels on you can count on  reduced accuracy.

I want one of these Marlin bolt guns, in either 308 or 270. I'll still take the 336 hunting most of the time, and the deer will still taste better taken with the lever... but I want one.

I'm glad to see Marlin have a good bolt gun.

Just picked up a XL7 in 270.  My previous handload went pretty well, just over an inch and the factory Rem 130 cor loks went slightly under an inch.  My barrel from the factory was VERY dirty.  lots of work to get it clean initially.  Has anyone else seen this?  After shooting it on that first outing, I had lots to do to finally get it clean again.  trying copper brush and FLITZ to try and smooth out the barrel.  I believe it will shoot in.

Bought the xl7 25-06. Extremely accurate with heavier loads. Am saving for the new varmint caliber models. Great rifles at a reasonable price. When more people find what a bargain they are I am sure the law of supply and demand will drive the price up. So, no valentines day present for the wife. Life does have it's priorities!

My brothers 25-06 Marlin shot really well if you fed it right, but he wanted a barrel longer than 22 inches. He rebarreled it with a McGowen 26" varmint weight barrel.   Wow that baby really shoots.

Do these Marlins come w/ a detachable magazine or just a blind magazine ?

The Marlins come with a blind Magazine .
Ask any one that owns and shot one- if that is the deal breaker?

I prefer my rifles w/ a detachable magazine or hinged floorplate.  Where I hunt on a military base you have to drive w/ your gun encased and zipped up. When you see game it is a mad scramble to unzip the case, take out the gun and load it. Then when you re-enter your vehicle you have to unload. With a blind magazine it's a pain in the neck. Much faster and less aggravating w/ a detachable or hinged floorplate.
My Rem 788 has a detachable mag. but the opening is too small for rapid insertion. Looks like the Ruger American and TC Dimension have larger openings for detach. magazine, so that's a good step evolutionary wise.

Boarhuntr, sounds like you'd be better off with a break action single in that situation. leave open in the case unzipp stuff slam cock fire. faster first shot than your bolt action! Good luck.

Cuda,
I had considered that. I have a H&R 30/06 break open rifle. Very handy, but no sights. I had a scope mounted at one time, but decided that interrupted w/ uncasing it. Now I'm thinking about installing a Skinner peep sight.
When game is sighted while driving you have only seconds to uncase the gun, and load it. A break action gun would be fast to load and unload, and you can be on your way in a flash.
BTW, I put some oversize key rings on my gun case zipper so I don't have to fumble around trying to unzip the darn thing. With cold fingers the average zipper tab is next to impossible to handle.
Will keep you guys posted when I have my Skinner sights installed. Hope to score.

finally got the new Boyd's stock on my XS-7 7mm-08 and the new safari ching sling from Galco. Man does she look purdy! a little heavier but much nicer balance and feel. Loaded 100 rounds up with IMR 4007ssc 50 in new remington cases and 50 in once fired rem cases neck sized only both with 140 grain sierra pro hunter sp. Now just waiting to get to the range to see what this powder will do in my rifle. anyone here have experiences with this combo?

I cut down and recrowned a XL7 for my barber's wife to 18.5. I decided then I had to have one for myself.
I just bought a .308 XL 7HV. If it shoots as well as it looks I will be very happy. The one I cut down shoots 1/2 groups at 100yards all day.
I want to try some F class this year and hope this will be the rifle I use.  Later Tom  8) ;D

ok the wife and I took the 9 year old daughter out the local range on sunday. brought the marlin 795 22lr and the XS-7 7mm-08. just plinking for fun with cheap foriegn ammo in the 7mm we were hitting targets out to 200 yards with the scope still zeroed for 100. i shot 5 with 5 hits. i love this rifle. Daughter says she loves the 22 and the big rifle is too loud. she shot up 400 rounds at clay targets at 75 and 100 yards. I got sore fingers loading magazines for her. all in all a great way to spend an afternoon.

I have had a Marlin XS-7 .308 for about 2 1/2 years now. I bought it in Jan. 2010, and then deployed before being able to use it. Right before I deployed I bought a Burris FFII on clearance with binos, and sold the binos for $65.  I have under $450 in the gun, scope, rings and mounts, and sling. 2011 was the first time I was able to hunt with it, but it took 2 bucks. I shot a small 6 point opening morning, as my son refused to shoot it. The Friday after Thanksgiving, my son finally got his first buck, which was another 6 point whitetail. We have since PCS'd to AK, so I don't know how much use it will get, but my son has claimed it has his hunting rifle. He is determined to get a moose and caribou with it over the next 4 years.

I bought a Xgun in .243 about a year after they hit the shelves, was think'n it would'nt be much of a gun since it was so cheap, out the door was just a few $$ over the 300 mark, topped it off with a Wally World Center Point scope at $less than $75 out the door. also picked up a couple boxes of ammo while ther.
Tell ya what... with cheap box ammo it'll shoot rite at a inch or less at 100 yards off the hood of my old ford with a rolled up coat for a rest, fix'nta replace the scope with something better & get some reloads & find out what it'll do.
Bang for the buck ya cant beat'um, they shoot as good as guns cost'n twice as much, when the rubber meets the road it comes down to how good it shoots & dead is dead.
I've never been lost,,,just rite fearsome confused for a few months.

Maybe I am not shooting my gun near as fast as some of you are, as I am not noticing the barrel heating up as much as some of you state. The last time I shot mine, I was rotating between the .308, and my new Remington 700 .300 WM. The .300 WM as hot as all get out, but the .308 was still fine to the touch. I undertand the .300 WM pushing more powder, etc., so it should heat up a lot quicker, but the .308 was doing just fine. I got an honest 3/8" 3 shot group from it as well.  I was shooting the 165 Federal Fusions out of it, and the gun seemed to really like it.  I shot this rifle quite often last year on a make shift 110 yard range, and it was in the 90's in AR the majority of the time. Yes, the barrel got hot, but no hotter than any of my other rifles.

I have an x7 in .223 sporter and regardless of it being a Remington owned company now, this rifle shoots very well. Like some gun companies, they sell off to other's. H&R was bought by Marlin before Marlin was bought by Remington....so it goes..

Necro!!! Picked up my xs7 .243 about 3 years ago, give or take, around $270 with the unmarked 3-9x scope. While I'm entertaining an optics upgrade at some point, it's a blast to go shooting with my friend and his 2" grouping 7400 in .270, while his jaw drops at my Marlin's half inch groups. Warms the ol' ticker, it does.
As for the barrel, I'd love to find something a bit thicker, but I can generally get through a box before I start to see stringing. If I'm gonna head back to NM to clobber prairie rats, I can be patient and take cooling breaks, I suppose.
