Rubber covering for stock butt
« on: January 23, 2011, 04:04:32 PM »
I am looking for a solution to a problem I have on several guns.  I do not need a recoil pad on these guns as there is little to no recoil.  What I do need is a very thin rubber pad about 1/4" thick that I can round off the edges by hand to fit each diameter stock and apply with either adhesive or small screws.  There are no gunsmiths in my area and I don't feel comfortable in cutting down the stocks and adding a full size recoil pad to keep the correct overall length.  If anyone could give me some advice on this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

Pachmeyer makes a rifle plate in rubber, in several patterns. they are easily affixed and take up little more length than a standard butt plate. Brownells has them and they're relatively inexpenxive..

Thanks...I thought about those early on but I don't know if they are truely 1/4" thick...I'll give them a call.  What I need on at least one gun is the thinnest (1/16") yet tough rubber material I can glue in place.

What I did was to go to the hardware store and get some adhesive back material (the stuff that's put on steps and sidewalks )to prevent slipping. Take off the butt plate, draw a pattern, cut to fit, stick on butt plate, reattach butt plate. Might not be a permanet solution, but the stuff is cheap enough to be replaced when it becomes "ratty".

I once bought a M72 Winchester that had been treated to a simple butt plate fis.. The butt plate was a pice of a tennis shoe sole, the tough bklack part that had been peeled away from it's backing. It was glued to the butt of the rifle and the excess trimmed away by a very sharp knife. Worked well, but was not acceptable on such a fine collector grade rifle.  Still it worked well, was very simple and quite cheap.
