41 Magnum- Deal or no deal?
« on: January 24, 2011, 05:24:57 AM »
Hey fellas, I was curious about your opinion on this. I found a RBH New Model at a local shop for $350. 6-1/2'' blued, 41 magnum. I like the caliber and was planning to build one into a PPP, Taffin style. The bad point is that it must have had some minor rust on it that somebody scratched off with a pick or screwdriver. So maybe 8 or 10 spots there is some very minor pitting and light scratches... At arms length they're not noticable. The salesman said that the condition was accounted for in the price. I'm probably gonna go through it all anyway... What do you think, deal or no deal?

I see them for that or usually less in conditions w/o any rust at all.  I'd pass but that's me.  Don't like rust/pitting.  If it's something that'll be a project gun , maybe but even then...  I'd pass.

I think it's a 'good/bad thing.  It seems a little high for a gun with cosmetic issues, but on the other hand, 41 mag's are hard to come by if that's what you like.  44 Man

That's what I paid for mine ... then send it to Ruger and ask them to restore it to new.  They'll replace most of the parts for free and charge $130 for a re-blue.

Make them an offer and have cash, might surprise you.  Had a s&w 57 and loved it.  My Dad always said"guns cars and guitars, prices always negotiable."

Really?? I wondered if Ruger did that, I know a few other major manufacturers will restore their older models for reasonable cost... I'm definitely picking it up, especially since the Hogue Monogrip I ordered for my 44 SBH came in wrong- should fit the .41 ;)

Yes...ruger has been just great.  BTW...your SBH grips may not fit your BH as it's a smaller grip frame.

I'd make them an offer too. Be sure the rust is only on the outside & not in the chambers or bbl. Then I'd offer them $300 & see what happened. I'm betting they paid the fellow very little for a rusted gun even it it'd been cleaned off.

I scoured that gun for fifteen minutes and there was no evidence of pitting in the chambers or barrel. I'll have to make a low cash offer anyhow, the ''picker'' in me haha. The grip I ordered was for the ''dragoon'' style frame sbh but are too small to fit, hence my reasoning that they are instead for the smaller framed Blackhawk. Thanks, fellas!

No deal, for me. Too high for the condition described, IMO.

I just put a monogrip on my BH - it, too was ordered for a SBH but won't fit a Bisley frame. Fits the regular BH and the Single-Six like a glove - as advertised.
Picked up my .41 Blackhawk for $150 from a guy who had it riding in his truck toolbox for 15 years without shooting it. There were still 32 rounds in the box of ammo - the only one he ever bought - and 6 in the cylinder. Said he shot one rattlesnake and a couple of beer cans with it.

I'd grab it anyway and fix the finish myself with some cold bluing but thats just me.  I would haggle the price more too.

I passed on a New Model in excellant condition for $300, but did give that for a 3 screw that is about 90%. I hit alot of gun shows and I have seen alot of New Models in 90% plus for that price.
