My Midway moment
« on: January 24, 2011, 09:48:09 AM »
I placed an order to Midway today for a few reloading items.  I order my reloading supplies from either Midway or Midsouth.  I ordered a Hornady tumbler(on sale), some Franklin media and a Franklin media separator. The separator was a basic $9.69 plastic pan. The shipping charge was going to be $29.65 on a $83 order!  If I didn't order the separator, the shipping charges were something like $15.85.  Almost $14 for the plastic pan to be shipped!  If I would order a similar Hornady separator instead of the Franklin, there were no additional shipping charges!  If I ordered the Franklin separator by itself, there was an additional $3 fee for the order being under $25 but than the shipping charge was $7.57.  It would be sent UPS Basic rather than UPS Ground but would arrive on the same date.  I wanted the Franklin pan because it is deeper.  I ended up making 2 orders to save myself $3, but I find this as strange as h..l.

Just another one of Mr. Potterfields little money tricks.
The product price is cheap, to get you there, then he hits you with the shipping.
Very common these days.
Not the way I would do business but seems to be the in thing these days.
To many other companies out there to worry about cheap tricks like that.
Take your business else where.
Maybe some day he will understand the correct way of conducting business.

I quit Midway and look at Midsouth first.

I'm looking for the cheepest way to get powder.

Local shops here (Nowhere, Mississippi) carry very few reloading supplys.

I am sick to death of getting gouged on the shipping by Midway. I wanted to order a sizer die for my Lyman lube sizer a few months ago. The price was someting like 19 bucks then add the small order fee then add the shipping I think it worked out to be 15-16 bucks extra to ship something that is the size of a roll of quarters. I found one on ebay for 15 bucks shipped.

I used to be a loyal Midway customer, now the only way they ever get an order from me is if it is something I absolutely have to have and no one else has it in stock.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

Something is definetly wrong when often you order a small part and the shipping costs way more than the part itself! One of the many reasons I hate ordering stuff. I'd much rather find what I need locally, pay the price and walk out with said item. Plus I like to actually see and inspect what I'm paying for.

I`ll visit the Midway site and check the user ratings on a product. Then I usually send to Midsouth for it. Midway charges way too much for shipping. Maybe `ole Larry is watching???

I'm with you 100%, and I'll also add I like to be able to talk to a knowledgeable guy behind the counter.  With the right shop, he knows the products, goes to the shows, talks to the manufacturer reps, etc.  I'd rather pay a few $$ more to the local shop to keep it in business because I get that value back, and more, with their time and expertise.  I hear people talk about using up the local gun shop time and taking advantage of their knowledge, then buying on line to save a couple $$, then complaining that the local gun shop is going out of business.   ::)

Me too, haven't used them in years. I used to order a lot of knives from smokey mountain knife works too, but got tired of being gouged for shipping. I've ordered a new catalogue from Midsouth. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Last time they tried the ole $3.00 service charge" on me I went back and ordered a bore brush to put me over by $.01.  It is still a racket because even if the weight difference is minimal they boost the shipping fee.  Unfortunately for me even paying the extra fees is still cheaper than what I can get it for locally.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

Mid-south has that $3 small order fee also and from what I can see their shipping is not much if any cheaper than Midway. I have started using that search button on my computer and most times can find what I want at a better over all price than either!

I agree about that 3.00 fee. I started an order with them about 6 mo. ago and didn't complete it because of the 3.00 fee. Someone from MW actually called me to see why I didn't finish the order. After my explanation she could only say, "have a nice day" and hung up. I ask her if Larry knew how much business he is loosing over that 3.00 charge. No reply. Thankyou for your business!!!! Larry.

I've had similar experiences with Sportsman's Guide. When I include their shipping I could have just gone down the street to Cabela's and paid the same.

I had to order 2 "special" tap Screws this year from Sears (which ticked me off to begin with) ..
Screws were a steep 1.49 a piece which was ridiculous as well.

Then I was socked $6.29 cents for shipping + Handling.

Screws arrived in a ridiculously huge 6" x 4" Manila envelope (the kind that had bubble wrap inside) ...when I opened the envelope here are the 2 tiny Screws in a tiny 1"x 1" plastic bag.

Close to $10.00 total charges for 2 itty bitty screws.

How Ridiculous is that.   I am so tired of companies that gouge people on S+H.

Take a look at Graf & Sons.   They do have a minimum $25 order BUT the shipping is only $4.95 for internet orders or $6.95 for mail orders.  That's all, wethet your order is $25 or $2500.    They are the first place that I look when I need reloading supplies and equiptment.

1. I will NEVER ship basic. It goes UPS to your post office. Then your post office delivers it as if it is parcel post. IE. whenever they get around to it.

2. To avoid the small order fee I just add some stock items, targets, case lube, ammo boxes, or bullets. And to me $15-$20 shipping is not all that bad when diesel is $3.49 a gallon and gas is back to $3.09.

3. I if takes me 1 hour to drive to the local store and back to pick up a $2 screw it would be better for me to pay to have it shipped even with the $3 fee.  Chances are that $2 screw will cost me five to six hundred dollars it I end up seeing a new toy I  got to have.

Last time I ordered from Grafs the shipping charge on the invoice was indeed $6.95.  I used my CC to pay for the item(s) and thought nothing of it.  When I received the package the packing list indicated that I was charged $18.95 for shipping and handling.  So I called Grafs and asked why they had arbitrarily altered the shipping cost.  They said that since I live in Hawaii the had to ship Priority Mail.  They did however offer to refund me as long as I paid return shipping?

I kindly explained that pigs would fly before I ordered again from them.

Ol Larry has got my last order too. I try to deal with only honest businesses. I hope that his business drops enough that he starts asking questions, but I don't think he really cares about his reputation.

Someone needs to forward this link to Midway Customer service so they understand how word of mouth can hurt a business. Perhaps they will rethink their  S+H business model.

Glad to hear others with the same complaint I have about Midway. Went to order a car safe. It was on special for $19. Than I was told there was a 3 fee for anything under $25 dollars. The total was somewhere amount $32 buck for the $19 item and shipping. I told them to cancel and lower their shipping cost.

For what it's worth I have told them about how I feel.
They sent me a survey on a recent purchase.
I answered it truthfully and fairly.
Big complaint was the hidden charge that pops up late in the transaction.

I have on occasion requested the order be sent in a priority mail envelope where appropriate. The sales people will tap dance around it in every way imaginable. Deals are in place with UPS and Fed-EX that benefit the seller.

It would be more honest if they would just advertise their mark up and quote free shipping. Instead they think the population are idiots and hide the profit gain hoping you won't notice. I am just curious what would happen if someone actually offered to pick up their order. That would be interesting.
