In my copy of the 1981 Gun Digest, page 100, is a picture of Naiche an important Apache leader,sitting for a prop picture with a Frank Wesson single shot rifle. The favorite caliber was 45-70 in various makes of single shot rifles. Now how cool is that! michstew

It's hard to believe that 150 years later the .45-70 single shot is still a favorite rifle for many of us......myself included.

I believe i read some wheres on on this site that you have to have a 4570 to get to the after world

Yeah, that's because he took enough of them away from the U.S. Cavalry

My wife's Tribe is Ponca....plains indians. I've got a lot of respect for the finest Light Horse Cavalry in the World.

If Custer and his troops had had Handi's , might have been a different outcome. But I doubt that, since the tribes were engaged to stop the flow of whites on their lands. Plus the gun runners and Mormon's were suppling repeating arms. The native peoples of this country got a raw deal from the government. And that is a understatement!!!!!!! michstew

The indians had repeating rifles and Custer and his guys had trap doors. The U.S. Government had just begun to shine.......they still haven't learned anything.

I like reading up on this stuff and Texas has a lot of rich history in the old west.

My family tree can be traced back to 1850 when Polish immigrants came over and landed in Galveston and made their way on foot and wagon to settle just east of San Antonio where my family still has roots.

In order to stay on topic I often wonder what their choice of caliber and firearm was back then. Not a lot of choices I would imagine and I'm sure there was at least a few 45 long Colts and maybe a 45-70 or two!

Here is something I found on the Ponca Indians to satisfy my curiousity.

Jim, thank you for the link. I saved it for Patty to enjoy. It amazes me that our grandparents and great grandparents had the courage to come here from Europe and carve out a new life. In 1850 they were probably still shooting flinters, perhaps not.

You are probably right about the flinters, and being immigrants they were probably not able to afford some nicer one's if at all.

You would have to think though going it alone into the wilderness with bandits and hostile Indians they would have to have placed a priority on a good dependable firearm if not only for protection but to help feed their families by taking game.

Sure wish there was more family records of how things actually were!

nice shot fer sure , calvery was on the way though. Custer faced a different situation. Lets remember Grant had a say in the single shot rifle and his brother in law made a profit on them ( some say Grant got a kick back ) . Besides the Civil War proved the repeter was the way to go. Custer did not carry his gattlin guns or cannon. Lots of things caused the defeat.

I got my first Handi, a .45-70 about five years ago, and shortly after bought Paul A. Mathews' book "Forty Years with the .45-70". That book convinced me that in the steady hands of a young man with good eyesight, the .45-70 could hit, and kill just about anything he could see. I can't do that, but I can drive spikes with it at 300 yards. Of course, "Everyone" knows the .45-70 is only a 100 yard rifle.......tell that to the last whitetail I dropped with one shot at 220 yards. Der aint nuttin like de ole .45-70.
