Thanks, now it would be nice if I can figure out a hanger bar for it, so far if mounted to the chamber swell like I wanted, it will interfere with opening the action, there isn't enough clearance at the front of the frame, I'd have to remove some metal there to do it, and I'm not comfortable doing that, so I may have to use a hanger bar attached to the barrel just ahead of the barrel swell instead.  Still thinkin on it and am open to suggestions.

I'm thinking aluminum to keep the weight down, since the rifle handles well, even tho there isn't much weight difference, the thinner profile moves the balance point to the rear which makes it feel better than a 22" standard barrel. And cut to 18" will make it even nicer.  :)

How about a piece of alum. square stock held with multiple screws ala the under-rib on halfstock muzzleloaders. Then route or mill a matching channel in the forestock and use whichever mounting point you want up into the alum.?
With a ball mill you could radius the alum. a bit and finish off with a sandpaper wrap around the forward taper of the barrel to get it just right when it is mounted farther back.

How about sending it up here, I will cut two dove tails about an inch apart in front of the chamber swell and cut and crown it.  Then you can attach anything you like to it.  Larry

Send your frame in with a barrel order just like any accessory barrel order, see reply #35 in the New Accessory Barrels sticky.

Thanks for the offer Larry, but I wanta work with it the way it is first to see how it shoots, then I'll probably do the work myself, then I'll have the tool and material to do several more barrels the same way, I think that sounds like a great way to do it,  along with gcrank's thoughts, I thank both of you!   ;) Midway has the dovetail cutter for $24 and $4 shipping. Doing the work myself keeps me on my feet and not sitting in front of the computer, I went on a diet a little over a week ago and lost 10lbs already, want to keep the weight loss going thru the summer if I can, then maintain a reasonable facsimile of a former me, my driver's license has me at less than 190lbs, been a long time since it was true!  ;D

I looked again, they have one version (the combo) built on the old Rossi frame and the newer version built on the Wizard frame.  Should be easy now to buy the Wizard frame and then put your favorite cut down Handi barrel on it for a Handi_R pistol.  Larry

Quick, I was kind of wondering how the wizard barrels profile compares to the thiner profile barrels like on a 158. Other than the chamber swell being longer is it close? Perhaps a picture of the handi, wizard, and thiner H@R profile barrels together if possible?
Thanks Don.

I posted the dimensions compared to a standard H&R barrel, it's quite a bit bigger than a Superlight barrel which is .750" and .625".

Tim

Quote
Unfortunately, the 23" barrel isn't that much lighter than an H&R standard contour barrel, it measures ~.860" just ahead of the chamber swell, compared to .920" for my SS 30-06 barrel, and .688" at the muzzle compared to .670" for the Handi, and weighs 3lbs-6oz compared to 3lbs-9oz for the 22" Handi 30-06 barrel.

The under lug on a standard Rossi is about 3/8 inches shorter than the underlug on a H&R.  They are about the same width.  The Rossi uses stamped out parts and solid pins to hold them all in place.  The underlug it's self appears to be forged or cast.  Larry

I did the ejector tune and added a BB to the Wizard underlug,  ejector is designed just like an H&R, but is rough cast except for the post, and the solid pins are splined on one end just like H&R frame pins.

Tim/Larry:

Is this lug ".010" shim" something a GBO member with machining/fabrication experience would be able to produce in quantity for a reasonable price for other Handiholics? The reason of course is to make it easier for individual barrel "fitting" efforts by us non-fabricators/machinists/workshopless/garageless folks?

I just use steel shim stock, it comes it various thicknesses from .001" and up, shims are discussed in the FAQs barrel fitting info.

Hanger bar is done, don't know if I'll ever get in the habit of making them, I'll do one on an H&R barrel and see how it goes, sure seemed like it was a lot of work, maybe the next one will seem easier.  :-\ I used 2024 and 6061 aluminum which seem to be a good compromise for strength and cost, 10-32 screws for mounting because they're readily available at Ace.

H&R forget to patent their underlug/extractor?

It undoubtedly expired long ago, given how long Handis have been on the market.
