Sometime tomorrow I should be receiving the 22 l.r. barrel and composite stock set to turn a G2 into a birthday present for my son.  He's got a Savage Youth Cub 22 that fits him fine, but I wanted to take him to the next level and also have a platform for a deer caliber down the road.

So, I'm looking for ideas on how best to shorten the buttstock.  I was initially thinking about cutting it down to where the "hump" starts and then cutting a plug to fill the stock.  Epoxy the plug in place then grind the recoil pad to fit and use the plug for the screw attachment.  I was thinking a plug made out of wood as I'm a woodworker of sorts.

Anyone have ideas or experiences.  Pics of some examples would be great.

When we decided to upgrade my son from a Chipmunk to a larger gun the wife went to the Contender Cache (Local TC store/dealer) and got a 22LR barrel and a youth stock.  I took the pistol grip off and put the Youth stock on, it was fine.  Then when he grew out of the youth stock, She got a full size stock for him.

Eventually the wife got him an Anschutz and I got my Contender back.  I kept the youth stock.  In the winter when I am wearing a heavy parka or coat the youth stock is just right for me.  I'm 6'3".

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I had my gunsmith build one up for my daughter. This one's for an early Contender frame. I had him cut it off just behind the sling swivel. It came out great, and it's pretty short. I'm into the whole thing, including the cost of the new stock, for less than $100.

I purchased a walnut stock with a chipped "toe".  I squared it up in my table saw and cut about an inch off of it, then reground an old recoil pad to fit.  Makes a pretty little carbine with a tapered 30-30 barrel.  My ten year old daughter is a crack-shot with it!

I'll try to post pictures tomorrow.

The plan you have for plugging the plastic stock with a block of wood should work, just be careful to get it cut cleanly the first time.  I don't know if the Rynite (or whatever it's made from) will chip or not.

I've got a sliding miter saw and with the stock set just right I should be able to make a clean pass and cut it right the first time.  I've also got a sander that should do the trick with the plug and also re-contouring the recoil pad.  The plug should also work well for re-attachment of the sling stud.  The stock and a .22 barrel are in transit my way from a recent purchase.  So, once it gets here I'll get to work and take some pics.

I made one for my Encore so my daughter could use it with the 223 Remington rifle barrel. I cut one inch off a used adult synthetic stock just behind the swivel stud. Then I stuffed the cavity with Wal-Mart bags, and slipped on a small Limb saver recoil pad. This setup functions perfectly at 12 ½ LOP.
