Thinking about your age, and putting it into prospective
« on: January 28, 2011, 09:10:48 AM »
Met one of my neighbors just now when I walked out to get the mail.  Larry yelled and came hobbling down.  (Larry is 72, and fell off the roof last year shattering his pelvis)  He said "Rog your always running around on snowmachines, 4-wheelers, track vehicles, motorcycles, and them fast sports cars, I'm going to show you something that will slow you down a bit".  This will put your life into prospective.  Larry then pulled a measuring tape out of his pocket.

Larry asked "How long do you expect to live".  "The National average is 76".  He pulled the tape out to 76 and put his thumb on it.  "Now how old are you"?  62, Larry put his other thumb on 62.  Darn, each one of those inches represents a year.  "Larry," I says, "I got to get going, I got a lot of miles to put on them rigs, and not a whole lot of time left to do it.

I went around back and fired up the snowmachine, letting it warm up.  Came inside and got dressed.  Typed this, and all that is left is to grab my stocking hat, coat, mittons, and 30-06, out the door and go.  See you later tonight or tomorrow.  Rog

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

A classmate of my child has a grandpa that is 74. Rich guy, has homes in 3 continents and time to play with grandkids on all 3. When he goes to Beijing with his 36 year old daughter and carries his grandkid around in one of those kangaroo pouch things, they think that his daughter is his trophy wife. Must be doing something right.

My dad is 86 and my mom is 82. They are slowing down a little, but are still sharp as a tack. What makes me feel old is the fact that my son just turned 18 last Saturday. Seems like just yesterday he was born. The time just goes by too fast.

There are a lot of old wives tales about getting older. One of the biggest is that we get shorter in height, I know for a fact that is not true. My legs have gotten a lot longer, not shorter. When I put my socks and shoes on, my feet are a lot farther away than they used to be. POWDERMAN.  ;) ;) ;) :D :D :D

Growing old is really a state of mind. Most 0f us have abused our bodies during our lives and suddenly we discover that we have many new pains that we never knew existed.I always had the idea that when I was older that I would have the time to do many of the things that was prevented because of the duty of raising a family and providing for their needs, but when you get to that point it doesn't work out that way.My advice is to live each day to its fullest and involve your families in that activity.many of the things that I enjoy today are things that my parents instilled in my life and they have served me well over the years.

I will be 72 in about three weeks. What it boils down to is your health. Mine is not good, so there are a lot of thing I can no longer do. Fifty years of them damn smokes likely caused my breathing problems. But you have to adapt and keep on keeping on.

I worked 40 years for someone else, the next 40 are mine and I am refusing to behave like an old man. I plan on running with my grandkids, and hopefully my kids will be on my case about trying act like I am 40 again. Then I will know I got this retirement thing down and am succesful at it.

Growing old is not an age thing.
Some folks get old, younger and some old, later.
I am of the first group, I think.
I see folks who are older than me---I am 70---who can do things I only dream about. While I am not decrepit I am not as agile as some older---my back is not as limber as some older folks I know---lots of things.
my health is good----well, at the moment I am typing this---and I have no complaints or fears.
One is simply as old as his/her body allows.
Blessings

This year is my last in my 20's.   Turn 30 this October.  Might not seem old to many of you, but I am starting to try to adopt a healthier lifestyle.  I still don't have any health problems that are life threatening (or even shortening) that I've found - my blood sugar is fine, cholesterol is fine, and my blood pressure is a little "elevated" but still not into what they're consider high.  I know though that there was a lot of stuff I should have done that I didn't.  I should be exercising more.  I should be eating less fried food - less meat, and more fruit and vegetables.  The meat that I do eat, I really should be eating more things like fish and chicken instead of pork or steak.

Basically, I'm hitting that point where those types of decisions matter.  Regardless of how badly they take care of themselves, you virtually NEVER hear of anybody in their teen's or 20's dying of preventable heath problems.  30's and 40's?  It starts to become a reality (particularly as I have 2 uncles he had non-fatal heart attacks in their 30's, and 2 grandparents who died of health problems in their 50's).

Part of the sad thing though, and a transition to make, is that the generation on the bubble is no longer the grandparents.  Most everyone I know around my age has already lost their grandparents, including me.  I've already started to see a few departures of people in my parent's generation - not from car accidents or the usual stuff that all age groups suffer, but just from people, essentially, getting old.  My parents are both in their early 50's so I hope I have many years left with them, but it is a sobering and depressing thought that the day isn't too far down the road when I'm actually going to have to start facing the real possibility of life without them here.

Even though I don't listen to a whole lot of country music, Tim McGraw's song "My Next Thirty Years" comes to mind.

At 75, old age is putting less stuff in my pack basket. Stopping more often on the trail. Falling asleep on watch. Remembering to turn off the stove. Remembering where I parked the truck. Having adult children ask about deeds, my holding company, and my will. They are convinced I'm senile.
So, last week I fixed them. I told them that I buried everything on the property and drew up a map. When my kid asked where the map was, I grew silent then said, "I gotta find where I put it". This all proves you can still have fun at 75.

At 61 I am pretty beat up. I cut a wide swath when I was young, but 20 years of fightin other folks fights for them, and a lot of trainin mishaps have left me pretty busted up. I have however, noticed that I only hurt when I'm awake.  ;D
I have taken to stayin closer to a pistol and a knife when I'm out and about now, as some of my old customers have gotten out of the pen, and my patience is although better in some ways, I have taken to shuttin some folks actin a fool off, as I just stay away from them all together.
My wife says my bluntness is still there, but put in a softer way which I guess was a sort of left handed compliment. I still won't sit in a public place with my back to a door, and my faith in my fellow man has all but dissipated entirely. I love my family, and a few friends, and my dog, but have little faith or use for the direction the rest of the world seems hell bent on goin.
A big sycamore tree on a secluded creek bank, a stool, a cup of hot black coffee, a small fire, with a Winchester across my lap, suits me just fine.
I do still appreciate a damn good horse however, and long to own one again, but hell, it makes as much sense as a dog chasin a car. Bending over a track and trying to corner a outlaw are as likely as catchin smoke. Them days is over.
Here while back I was going thru some shoe boxes in the closet and ran accross some old news paper clippins. There I was standing in a wash wearin a side arm, with my Winchester in one hand and talkin on walkie talkie to a helicopter. Damn it was hot in that river bottom that day, and I lost ole Lowrance's track that day too. It was a month before we caught him. Wonder if he's still alive. He was good in the woods but evil to the bone. Funny how you don't forget days like that. Hell that was in 1977.
It wasn't too far from the shootout at Caddo and Kenefic. By the time I got there that day, three Oklahoma troopers were dead, one shot up, and Dennis and Lancaster were dead too. I doubt I'll ever forget that day either. we hunted them two boys for about a month, and when they got cornered they went out fightin. You can still read about that fight on the internet. Amazin.
Well, here I am. The thread is supposed to be about puttin age into prospective, and I'm reflectin. Sorry bout that. I'll blame it on age.
Sourdough, the sun's still shinin here, but not as bright as it used to. Or maybe the shade just looks better. I'll bet that's it. ;)

At 67 I'm in pretty good shape considering the past, thank God, but I've got this 86 year old friend that puts me to shame. He's on the go every day.  I don't know how he does it.  If I followed him around I'd be worn to a frazzle.
