Pistol Peep sites
« on: January 28, 2011, 10:38:12 AM »
I dont shoot peep sites and I believe I must be missing something. The guys that do love them the US Military uses them etc.
Today I bought another Blackhawk in 44 Mag and on the gun was a peep site and I was given a smaller one also.

I didnt know such a think existed. You know I have not shot it yet but it seems to make sense.

My questions Do you shoot these? Where is the best place to learn to shoot them (I know the range I mean maybe instructions on line Military lit etc)? Who makes them if I like them? Were would you get more? I am very curious about these.

I once tried a S&W .44 mag. that a guy had at the range with a peep site replacing the rear site blade on the gun.  Don't know the make.  I found it was slow, and hard to get a good site picture.  Seemed to me it would have worked better with a lot larger aperture, as you could not hold it close enough to your eye because of recoil.

Pretty simple and straight forward to use. Your eye naturally centers the front sight in the aperture, the bullet strikes at the top of the front sight when sighted in properly. My first experience with aperture sights was in the military.  They are my preference for irons on rifles, never tried them on handguns but the principal is the same.

That's probably a "One Ragged Hole" peep sight.  They're outstanding, IMHO.   I put one on my Ruger SBH. See http://www.castbullet.com/makeit/44jb.htm

Peep sights on rifles, with a large aperture, are very fast and reasonably accurate. Rifle peeps with a small aperture can be the most accurate of all iron sights. Just looking through an aperture sharpens the image of both front sight and target. But to secure that advantage the peep must be close to the eye. Peeps mounted on handguns or out on the barrel of a rifle are too far from the eye so that you are looking AT the peep rather than through it and it then becomes just an obstruction of the view, not a good thing at all. Plain open sights combined with a stick-on aperture on the shooting glasses work very well because again the aperture is close to the eye.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I gotta disagree with you there Lloyd.  I used an aperture rear peep and front globe sight on an XP silhouette pistol.  Granted, it is not the easiest system to use but it does provide stellar accuracy if you can get used to it.  I will agree that it is NOT something that I would use to hunt with.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.
