Andersonville Prison
« on: January 28, 2011, 10:51:42 AM »
I have an ancestor that died at Andersonville Prison so I stopped there on my way back from Florida.
I found my ancestors grave.  He was with the 22nd Indiana for three years, then was captured at Peachtree Creek near Atlanta.  He lasted three months before he died from a disease caused by the unsanitary conditions.  If you go there, take a tour with a Park Ranger.  They are free, and interesting.  Our Ranger was a former Marine from Americus, GA.  A very nice person. They have a really nice POW display there also that takes a while to get through.  There are a lot of artifacts.
If you are ever near there, it's worth the stop.

Thanks Forestclimber, and Welcome to the forum. You are right about those tours at Andersonville. They are well worth the trip and I highly recommend them too.
Hope you stick around for a while.  :D

P.S.  That's a wonderful thing that you were able to find your ancestor's grave. I'm sure he was looking down and smiling at your visit. Many are not so fortunate to find them or don't know where to start trying to find their ancestors. Thanks again for your post.
