Remember when actors did not act?
« on: January 28, 2011, 02:04:48 PM »
The Rat Pack built careers by acting exactly the same in their personal lives as they did on screen. Womanizing alcoholics were the heroes of the day.

What changed?

When did Charlie Sheen, who plays a rich, womanizing alcoholic on the TV (highest paid actor on TV) and living it on weekends when he is not working, who always shows up for work, who supports many women and kids, turn into a pariah?

Why did Tracey Jordan, who plays a talented, intelligent, but close to insane comedian on TV, get ripped for doing exactly as his TV persona would have when asked about Palin?

And Eminem, who had the biggest comeback last year, rapping about his actual relationship with a woman that he has spent his entire adult life with, was criticized for sharing too much.

What exactly is wrong with being exactly who you are in your professional and personal life? Seems like they did it right.

Look at how the kids turned out from some of those actors. Not exactly what you can call a family ideal. I did plenty of running around and boozing it up when I was younger, before I got married. After I turned 40, I realized that sitting in a bar and getting hammered and trying to pick up any female that wanted to sit on a Harley and go back to my place, was getting old.
There is more to life than cheap thrills. Nice for awhile, but the hangovers and feeling like s**t the next morning wears thin. Just maybe, some of us have matured, and raising kids with a little bit of responsibility has taken over.
Do you have a daughter? Would you like her running around with man that treats her like crap and cheats on her, or somebody that takes care of her and respects her? Want her to marry a guy like that? Looks good in Hollywood, real life is a bit different. gypsyman

I see what Wreckhog is saying, and I don't believe some of you do.   Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Senatra, were themselves on stage.  That was the life they lived, and it was a hit in front of the audience.

When the TV producers were looking for someone to potray Charlie Harper on "Two And A Half Men" why not select someone who lives that life.  Charlie does not have to act, he just goes in and potraies himself.  His attatudes and beliefs.  It's hard for some people to understand, but Charlie Harper is the most looked up to persons on TV these days.  It's not that he is so funny, but he lives a life style many men "secretly" admire or even wish they could live.

Ever notice most of John Waynes chractors were pretty much the same.  Very little differance between the charector he played in "Liberty Valance", Jake McChandles, and US Marshall Cahill.  He was pretty much potraying himself.  His attatudes and beliefs.  He lived a life style that many men of his erea would have wanted to live.

Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I prefer my actors to be of the class of Jimmy Stewart, Charles Durning, Lee Marvin, David Niven, James Doohan, and Audy Murphy. I just think these guys are a cut above the ones in Hollywood today.

I understand the OP very well, I just don't like the actors that think it's fine to shoot, snort and pander about with absolutely no discretion what so ever. But thats just me.
When I speak of shooting it's not target practice or hunting.

Is the lifestyle represented by the Rat Pack what you wan't our society ot be like?

Media presents an illusion of how things are.  The rat pack wouldn't sell well as the only primetime viewing, not the right illusion.

Minstrals and actor troups that traveled the lands of old had a reputation for being liars and thieves because they could make you believe things that weren't true. Looks like we are where we have always been.

Say and think what you will but very few of the present day celebrities instill the admiration in folks as those of days past. The fact that many of the old movies are being remade goes to show just how great they were and still are. Too often though, people seem to forget that just because someone is a celebrity they are still human and open to many of the same problems in life that we face ourselves. All I exspect is good entertainment and I leave their personal lives to themselves.

I think actors who private lives spill out, such as multiple drunk driving, the constant negative contacts with the police and the wanna be thug mentality have got to go.

I listed several great actors in my previous post. They all have one thing in common. They all served in the military when the time came. Todays actors just want to bad mouth the government and tell foriegn governments what bastards America is.

Just my 2 cents.

The Rat Pack portrayed things they were not---boozers.
Dean Martins drink of choice--when on stage--was apple juice.
While none were above intoxication---they were very sober on stage.
John Wayne could only portray hisownself and was not a very capable actor when trying to act a part he was not---see "Taras Bulba".
Gregory Peck, Charleton Heston did good jobs playing characters out of genre life.
Actors--of those days--were left alone by the media. their private lives were never brought into focus as the stars of today have to deal with.
A modern star, who can act, but whose lifestyle is on constant display are the ilk of Sean Penn. There are a few others.
Stars of the day had their drugs and such but all that were reported were their marriage failures.
Lots of stars of the day were druggies or alchoholics---gone un-reported.

seems to me that actors just practice thier choice of a way to make a living..ive seen anthony hopkins be a fine old englishman and a cannible..they play parts ..some do well money wise ,some i suspect just get by..they would be treated as anyone else by me.. i treat other people like i want to be treated..
as to acting, i like the ones who can play different types of roles..
it wouldn t be something id care for ,i don t think...but i never tried it..slim
ps most of it is make believe ,and just entertainment..

I think if the school principal were to call me about a kids behavior or language I would rather it not be like Dave Chapelle, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, any of the cast from Jack Ass, etc.

Kids do emulate grown ups and celebrities. Just food for thought.

So do you think the wrestlers in the WWE and such live their lives like like their wrestling persona? They are just actors as well.

Charlie sheen is a sleazeball, so is his show. Nothing but bed hopping and sexual inuendos. Worst part  is involving that young boy in it. That boys real parents should be horsewhipped for allowing their son to be a part of a show like that. What kind of values will that boy have as a  grownup???? OOOOOPPPPSSSS I forgot, MONEY. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

You mean pro wrestling isn't real!!!! Say it isn't so. :D

When TV and other media outlets glamorize, criminal behavior, public drunkeness and whoremongering what do you expect a society to do?

nope, this just shows how little talent there is today. These people can not come up with an original idea of their own they have to rely on the old stuff to get by. either that or endless chase and shootem ups where no one gets hit. 400 rds fired everyone walks off.
