Good price for Savage mod 99???
« on: January 28, 2011, 04:08:02 PM »
A new gunshop opened up recently and I payed them a visit. Not a lot of guns or other stuff yet but he had a beautiful savage mod #99 lever in 308 win. Didn't see any scratches on the rifle anywhere, it really looked nice. It has a BIG scope on it and my wife was with me so dummy me didn't take the time to check it out. HEH, I have no idea what it was. The price is $380. Sounds good to me so I may try to do some swapping, don't have the money. Is that a fair price??? Charlie.  ;D ;D

Sounds dirt cheap for a discontinued firearm that is still in very high demand.  For that price I'd be concerned that it has "issues."

That is a good price. I didn't pay that for mine but I would have. It' didn't have a scope. I have a 99 f in 308. I had it cleaned and the trigger touched up. Then I polished the barrel. It shoots a 165 gr Game King at almost 2900 fps and holds sub moa. I wouldn't like a large scope on it. A low mounted 2x7 Leupold seems about right. The problem I've seen on most Savage 99's is that they've never been cleaned well. They get their barrels cleaned after deer season and are put into a closet til next year. The safety and action get stiff as the grease dries out. A good disassembly and polishing! will work wonders on these old guns. It did for mine

Holy cow Powderman! That's a great price! Just take a look on Gunbroker.com & Gunsamerica.com under Savage 99. It's hard to find anything for under $450+ shipping and transfer. If you do it usually is an abused rifle with rust, a sewer pipe for a bore, and beat up wood. I have been looking for a long time for one in 243 Win. in decent shape for a fair price. I'm starting to lose hope I will ever find one and am starting to look at Browning BLR's instead. I'd love to have a Savage 99, but the price has to be right.
