110 bolts breaking

  I just read a B.S. article from some writer that was trying to impress me by explaining that he had broken the bolt handle off a Savage 110, because of a hot load or something.
  Have you guys ever heard of a Savage bolt breaking? I broke one off a Rem. 700 once but it was not soldered proprely.  Very curious,  Bernie

  Never had the bolt break on a 110 but did have one break on a Rem. 788.  Sold one of the 110's to a friend of mine 30 years ago and he is still shooting it without any problems.

I have had mine around 40 years and the bolt is still good.  A friend had one from the same period a 110CL and it has out lived him. :o

The bolt handle is not brazed on, unlike Remington bolt handles.  The whole back of the bolt and the bolt handle are a single piece.  I find it highly unlikely.

Don't think you can break the bolt handle off a modern Savage, they are a single piece, on the squared end of the bolt body, held on by a very large screw.  The Remingtons do seem to fall off at a rather high rate however.  Larry

And in the highly unlikely case it did break off it is very easy to replace.

I agree with billy,  If I have a bolt handle break I hope it is one of my Savages.  I've been needing an excuse to order a tactical handle.  I've never had to bump the handle of any of mine and I get 3200 fps out of a 270 with 140 gr bullets.  I have three Savages three 788s and three 700 Rems and never had a problem with the bolt handles... even with hot loads.

Its been a long time but I was in a gun shop where a client was hopping mad that his  new 110 (270 cal) was seized up.  He couldn't open the gun and while I was there, neither could the guy behind the counter.  BUT the client went on and on about how he was using reloads that were fine in his other 270.  I have to wonder if the guy had an overload for that Savage.  Might have been fine or maybe pushing the upper limits of his old gun. He didn't seem to grasp that a new gun might have enough variation that would require working up loads specific for the new Savage.
