questions about the 44 carbine...

I looked thru a few pages and couldn't find what I'm lookin for. Browsing from my phone too so search is difficult at best for me so please bear with me.

I picked up a little 44 mag carbine. Wonderin if there is a site where I can find when the gun was made.

It has a wood stock in great shape. Thinkin of getting another stock to kinda help keep the original from getting dinged up too bad. Are stocks available? Could be synthetic but think I'd almost prefer wood... Ooh or thumbhole?

This one has the tube mag, not the rotary mag. Can that be converted? Maybe when I swap stocks?

Or is this blasphemy to the followers of this rifle?

What are these rifles actually bringing? I have maybe $350 in mine. Traded an 870 I had done a little work to for it.

Any issues I should be aware of? Thanks yall.

What you've got is probably a Ruger 44 carbine.  You could go to the Ruger website and search with the ser # for date of manufacture.  I used one extensively to shoot ALOT of hogs and feral sheep with.  I would not put a thumbhole stock on it it may raise your head too high to use either a scope or iron sights.

Sounds like a Deer Slayer.  Cool gun. Doubt it can be converted.

Sounds like you have the earlier of the two guns.  The one with the rotary mag is called the Deerfield.  I believe each has a different loading system and there is no reasonable way to change one to the other.  I am also afraid you are out of luck on finding an after purchase stock.  I have the Deerfield and really wish someone made a stock with a decent recoil pad on it.  Neither gun is made anymore and the price is naturally going up on them.  That being said my Deerfield in an excellent 100 yd deer gun.  Ruger says not to shoot cast bullets in either gun as the lub can mess up the gas system.  Both are built for  240gr jacketed ammo (will shoot lighter or heaver ammo) and like full power loads to function well.  I have a 3X9 scope on mine and that is plenty.  The Deerfield uses the Ruger mounting system and that puts the scope so close to the gun that ejected shells sometimes 'ding' the scope.  The Deerfield came with a padded scope guard to prevent that but if I were doing it over would get an 'armored' scope.  I really like my little gun and think you will liike yours also.

also meant to ask. this one has two different size screws on the top of the reciever where it was drilled and tapped. it also has two holes on the barrel just forward of the receiver. is all this factory?

YES, that is factory, the two holes on the barrel and the two rear holes on the receiver are for the scope mount and the two middle holes hold something inside the receiver DON'T take them out. I don't remember off the top of my head what they do but I believe it has something to do with the ejector. someone with a better memory than me will know.
I have two of the 44's a finger groove carbine and a lever action, love them both. they are great little guns and a ball to shoot............... Larry

It's just a different stock, made to be more sport looking, only made for a couple years.

I have owned one for about 25 years. Has an old redfield widefield on it .Will stack the bullets good at 100 yds. 240 gr. rem green box. Has killed me several nice bucks,I carry it only in tight woods.Also it was my sons learner deer gun.Easy progression from a 10/22. I have camo stock cover,but prefer it off.The older ones had metal buttplates.

     I just brought home Mon. my 2nd 44 carbine this one has a old weaver scope and is a 5 digit ser. # it is in my shop and I plan on cleaning it up as I did with the 1st. one and I will have both in the corner of the safe !   Jim
