Reloading question? 280 Rem
« on: December 18, 2003, 08:41:37 AM »
I have an Encore in a 280 Rem. My first set of handloads were in Rem brass, 58gr of R22, seated to 3.247". They shot well and averaged .6-.8" 5 shot groups. That brass did not last well and i got some norma brass and tried the same load. Groups opened to about 2". Then I seated the bullet out to 3.355" and groups came down to 1"

My theory is my gun likes higher pressure produced by Rems thick brass? Is that common and could I shrink my groups more by adding the max 59.5gr? How many FPS would 1.5 extra grains produce in a 26" barrel?

Thanks for any input,
Kyle

You are increasing the charge 2.5%, so your velocity will increase the same 2.5 %. But pressure increases by 5%, or double ( according to Powley).

NOT necesssarily. Velocity and pressure increases are not always linear. I've played around with incremental charges enough to know you can't accurately predict just how much your velocity will increase in that manner. Theory like the Powley is great but the real world just don't work that way.

I agree completely GB. I was stating a generally accepted " rule of thumb ". The only way to know for sure is to chronograph the load increments. I have found that it can vary in the same rifle, with different powders, temp, etc.

Also check the flash hole on the Norma brass, it's usually smaller than Rem or Win further dropping pressure. I have some 270 brass that reacted the same way, simply uniformed the flash hole to the same size as the Win brass I was using and vel increased.
