possible buy question
« on: January 31, 2011, 11:35:32 AM »
looking at a newer but used 45-70 handi, black synthetic stock, good condition, low rounds, plus .243 barrel. Barrel fitted from the factory. No scope with it, and no problems with either. $300 for everything. What do you guys think?

I'm not wild about any .243 or 6 mm to .25 calibers, so I'm probably not a fair judge, but I do think the price isn't bad.  If ya learn it, the .45-70 will do all the .243 can do...only better.  I had a 6mm Reminton Model Seven.  Worst rifle I ever owned.  Replaced it with a .308 Ruger M77 MKII......one of the best rifles I own.

Just an opinion.

Not a fan of 243 either, but for $300 buy it and sell the 243 if you don't want it and recoup some of your money.

Some?? More like half of it back.

$300 for a complete rifle with two barrels seems to be a good deal considering I just saw a 30-30 barrel listed for $145.

EDIT: I see why...http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,226356.0.html

If it was near me and I had the cash I would jump all over it.  It would give me one of my dream rifles (45-70)  and If I decided I didn't want the .243 I'm sure you could find a buyer on here pretty quick.

I'd offer $200 for the 45-70 and tell them to keep the 243 barrel.

Its a fair price. I say go for it. Once you have it go shoot it and decide if you "need" both barrels.  I have a 243, I don't use it much but its a great shooter. I will likely always own at least one 243/6mm. It is a useful caliber if used within what its good for. A large/long varminter to small/med range big game gun or great target hole puncher.
