I know I am probably too late, but I decided to send in my newest handi and have a .222Rem and a .35Rem barrel installed, that is if they still have em in stock.
I packed the receiver and fore end in the box along with another reciever and Forend and barrel that needed repair. So total I had :
two Receivers
two forends
one barrel
I took em to the closest UPS store ( 6 miles)
First thing the lady asked was "WHAT ARE YOU SHIPPING?" I replied "PARTS"...
What kind of Parts

"Gun Parts for repair" ( I should had said COMBINE PARTS )
She removed the box from the scale and proceeded to drill me about the parts.
Are they unloaded ?
Can these parts be made to fire ?
Can these parts be put together to make a complete gun ?
I said NO to ALL.....( I'm sure Homeland Security will be kicking in the door any minute now )
So I asked what the deal is on Shipping Fire Arms now days ,since its been a year or more since I have ordered barrels....
She said to ship GUNS, you must now go thru a dealer or take them to the "UPS HUB", the nearest HUB here is over 30 miles away !!
By the way, shipping to Ilion NY from NW Oregun today cost me $58.00 today. ( Third day )

I was wondering if anyone else here has had this experience shipping guns lately

I ship using the USPS. Just make sure you are sending it to an authorized repair facility or a dealer. I would think that the USPS would also be cheaper, but location may pay a part in your cost.

I usually use USPS. I print out the labels at my house and have them picked up at my house by the mailman, for free.

No questions asked.

I do the same with UPS, but they charge a pick-up fee.

USPS 110% of the time!!!!

I have had NOTHING but problems shipping Fed-EX or UPS!! I have shipped THOUSANDS of packages USPS since the early 90's and only ONE was ever claimed to me lost or delayed. That one was later found out the guy receiving it lied about shipment in an attempt to collect the insurance that he required I put on the item.

With a rifle just use the USPS, they can only ask you if it is dangerous or hazardous. It is no problem at all with them. If you are sending it to someone in your own state (and not selling it through GB) you can just send it directly to the person, no FFL required. Larry

I once tried to ship a rifle stock back to the factory using a UPS store and they flat refused to let me ship it!

I made it quite clear how retarded I thought that policy was, UPS delivered it to me in the first place, and went on my way. That store is now closed and a Chinese restaurant took its place.

I also use USPS unless the recipient requires UPS or pays for it! UPS regs are pretty well spelled out on their website, firearms can't be shipped from UPS stores and 3rd party retailers.

While this is 100& true. It seems, UPS employees do NOT seem to be privy to it!!!

I got different information from the local hub than what I got from the satellite store. I am lucky enough to be close to both.

Quick story...
A member here was starting a bullet collection and looking for some single pieces. I have many so I figured I would help him out. I called UPS and inquired what was the regulations. I knew it needed to be packed securely and labled ORM-D but beside that what... I was told nothing special was required, not to label it anything. Just bring it in and they would take care of it. They would even pack it if I wanted.
I packed it myself and went in. (Satellite store) I was flatly refused.. I told them what I was told and suggested that they pack it. Again they refused. I was told ammo or any explosive could not be shipped thru UPS. I explained that I get "explosives" shipped to me DAILY from UPS... (At the store) Blank looks followed. Then the manager came over, he explained I had to take a "class" on packaging available on their web site and then ship thru the UPS hub location only. I went there... more run around. They would NOT package for me and would not ship until I took that class... The member never did get my package as I have no way to get it to Alabama.

Stupidity abounds...Right then and there, I decided not to EVER deal with them again.

The simple answer is if you're shipping to someone in State, a FFL, a repair facility or the factory, just put it in the box and mail it. I make sure there's no indications of firearms or parts inside the box to help that it doesn't disappear along the way......and....INSURE IT.

Don't ever get caught shipping gun parts or ammo through UPS at a satellite store with out stating what it is.
That's a BIG NO NO!
I am not even sure if they will take them there.
I don't think they will.
They do scan packages from time to time and if they catch it, and it's not marked you will get a visit from the feds!!!
Fed-Ex never asks what's in the box.
I use them all the time to ship parts, not ammo.

I don't know about the USPS as I have never shipped parts or ammo that way.

I just went through the same thing a few weeks ago shipping some 270 wsm ammo to a member here.
UPS will not take it at a satellite store, only at the main hub which is over 30 mile round trip for me.
They will come to your house and pick it up.
I got the same run around as you.
Just bring it in as long as it's marked ORM-D Small Arms, wrong!
They must pick it up or you must take it to the main hub.
Fed-Ex must pick it up at your location.
It also must be in a burst proof box of at least 200 #PSI.
The USPS is suppose to take it but most will refuse.
About the only way to ship ammo without all the hassle is to get certified in Haz-Mat and open an account with Fed-Ex or UPS and then there is little problem.
For me, the only way I will ever ship ammo again is through my local gun shop.
Give him a few bucks and let him take care of it.
No more trouble!!!

I can only reiterate to use the US Postal Service. The USPS is a federal agency that follows federal law.

UPS and FedEx are private companies that make up their own rules. They rarely know the actual federal laws because their rules are always more strict.

I forgot to mention that while at the post office the other day I asked about shipping ammo and was told that it wasn't on the list so no problem as far as he knew but I needed to talk to someone with more knowledge.
They gave me a number to call.
It was to USPS Dangerous Goods division and was told that ammo falls under that description of the Haz-Mat Division and the USPS will not ship Haz-Mat.
Talk about a run around.
I get ammo and componets all the time from different company's through all three, USPS Fed-Ex, and UPS and told them so.
Didn't seem to matter, they still said no.
Just to much hassle for me.

The whole thing is just another example of too damned much government. Any one of you ever stood around and watched a UPS or USPS truck blow up?? It's just Yankee Dumbassed......a box of bullets is dangerous???. A broken down rifle is lethal??? It is just BATF crap. If we got rid of them and the IRS, America would be a lot nicer place to live in.

A friend of mine, I've known for more than 20 years has applied for disability Social Security. He was told it would take 8-12 weeks. He is wrecked. Arthritis and a ruptured disc in his spime. We're supposed to be be in the computer age?? Eight to twelve weeks???

I HATE THIS GOVERNMENT.

I'll expect the FEDs any minute.

Nah Pete, they don't want a bunch of single shots, but they might use it as an excuse. I'm sure you are on the list by now though. You should be proud. I also agree, we have so much government no one can keep up with the laws.

Small arms ammunition(including primers or primed brass) can't be mailed, it also can't be shipped with a firearm even by UPS or Fedex.

It seems to me that the USPS, Priority Mail, Flate Rate Box is the way to go when shipping Handi parts. "If It Fits, It Ships". This may be what dave29 was refering to ?

Just to add.....

You can go to the USPS website and order as many flat rate boxes or other Priority mail boxes as you want for free, they will ship them to your house.

That would be true for common carries like UPS and Fedex as it's a DOT regulation which I posted in the Shipping primed brass sticky in the Reloading classifieds, but it doesn't apply to mailing by USPS regs which has more strict rules governing hazardous materiel and specifically states primers are not mailable.

Here's the explicit reg that allows primed brass to be shipped, it isn't hazmat or ORM-D, it's unregulated as far as CFR49 applies, just ship it UPS or Fedex ground with no markings.

As of last year, the UPS Store in town has a sign hanging on the door saying they will not ship ammo, guns, gun parts, or any thing related to gins to include scopes. I think this is more of an individual owner thing, so I have taken my business to the packing store on the other side of town, and they just opened up a gun store adjacent to the packing store as well.

Im thinkin' that it is well to 'vote withour dollars' by supporting businesses that actually act like they want our business, but it is probably worthwhile to tell (or write) the other one WHY we wont do business with them.
The idea that our toys are legal to own and legal to play with and they discriminate against them and us, is to me, a prime example of them missing the point. They want the benefits of this country while denying them to us.
