Elk hunt at Lawton

 Scored on a cow on the second evening ,she dressed out at260lbs.I do not think i have ever been as cold in my life.I would like to encourage everyone to try and draw this hunt.Scenery is fantastic,buffalo standing 50 yards from you is a great experience.Applications are avalible on line in March.

I'm moving to Ft Sill in June. Please keep me informed to how the drawing system works. IF...I can register this year, I will, but I might need to wait until I have a permanent address. I'm interested in hunting just about everything too. ;)

  DINNY,Welcome to Oklahoma. Go to wildlifedept.com then go to controlled hunts,They can answer your ?s.I do know that non residents can apply.If you like hunting does it is fairly easy to get drew in.When the hunts come out in march I will post it and I will help you.If I can help with anything else let us know

 Yes.or some of them could be called free mountain instead of free range.It is not a canned hunt.It is alot of climbing and glassing you are only allowed 5shells and you must get your elk to the road

They say the Witchita's are the oldest mountain range in N. America.
And as stated odds go up on cow hunts, I've had several buddies draw cow tags.
All were successful.

I signed up for that Washita Mountains Elk Hunt for years 30 years ago but never got drawn.I was West of Lawton near Cashe, Ok last month and saw Buffalo out of my truck.I know that area is loaded with hogs and it is knock down gorgous ,I would to go back.

Actually a geologist friend of mine said they are some of the oldest in the world.  Pretty awesome stuff that people don't know about.

Odds are better for drawing a cow but harvesting odds are better for a bull.  I hope each of you get drawn some day as it is well worth the trip even if you don't get one.

As for the bison, on the first day the dropped me off in the dark and I started walking towards a "bush" to wait until sunlight.  I got about 10 feet from the "bush" and it started running away from me.   :o  Needless to say that "bush" was a bison and I am just glad he wasn't running AT me.
