The addiction has struck again!!
« on: February 02, 2011, 11:17:42 AM »
A couple months ago when I bought the new 35 Rem Handi I swore that was it, no
more as I really did'nt need it but had to have it. Yessir going cold turkey. Was doing
fine, passed up even looking when I heard new barrels were available. Then alas this
rifle appeared out of nowhere, a lonely orphan from another age of H&R history, born
but abandoned for other siblings. A lonely 7x57 NEF. I started to sweat, got the shakes
& walked away but somehow I found it on my doorstep Monday. Didn't Have the heart to
send it away in the winter weather :o.
Its a 1993 NH serial # Ultra in pretty good condition, some light scratches on barrel but
great receiver & bore. The trigger is a nice 2 3/4 lb pull. Got a Nikon Prostaff scope. Never
loaded this caliber before but would appreciate if some of you other lucky owners would be
kind enough to pass on some of your loads. I have been told that it is similiar to the 7-08.
I swear this is the the last Handi I will buy :-[ :P. Fredster

You have to swear on a stack of H&R catalogs. This is all before it is official.

I feel the need for one myself... (35 Remington)

Looks very nice. One question, did you add the old style recoil pad? (EDIT I see its on a older model 7x57)

Fred,

I think you should leave the door open for possibilities.  Obviously, you are a man in full control of your faculties, as I am, but there are emergency situations that arise in life that demand immediate decisions.  For instance, I've never SEEN a 7x57.  Now, I don't need one, but a rare find like that demands an immediate purchase.  After all, you might never have lived to see another.  And what if it becomes NECESSARY for you to have one?  You are now prepared for that eventuality.

The above usually works somewhat on my wife as she tunes me out after the second sentence............

I can't believe you had the willpower to pass on the 50 BMG! ::)

Nice find Fred.  I've told myself if I happen into a 7x57 or other discontinued and highly prized caliber I would buy it and then find it a permanent home.  Yeah right!

I've never SEEN a 7x57.

Well darn Ben!  Just come up to my home place and see mine!   ;D  I got a thumb hole stock on it.  As I remember, I originally paid $220 for the rifle...  ;)

I might just do that one day.....by the way, that oil absorbent I mentioned in another post is "Nature's Broom".  Comes in 20# bags, and is relatively inexpensive.

Hope the missus' does well with her surgery.  Having been through this, I think of you all often.

It's okay my friend no "intervention" is needed.  It's a Handi 7x57....would've been a tragedy (darn near a crime) to leave her behind.  Would you leave someone drowning in a river (this excludes ex's and mother-in-laws)?  I think not.  I commend you!

I can't think of a single Handi I "need", but If I ever come across a 7X57, that baby is comin to live with me!  That is the cartridge that started my love affair with 7mm's.  Now, I don't even have a 7X57 :'(.  If you hand load, the 7X57 will get a bit more velocity at the same pressure as the 7mm-08, case capacity is between the 7-08 and the 280, as is speed at equal pressure.  I also have never seen one, lookin at who says they got em, maybe a tall tale?! :o ;D ;D ;D  (Just pullin tails here guys.)  DP
