Ruger GP100
« on: February 02, 2011, 12:57:37 PM »
I bought a Ruger GP100 and its rough opening up. Like the cylinder gap is too tight and its rubbing when opening the cylinder.

Has this happened to anyone else?
Should i filed it down .001s of an inch?

You should probably consult a gunsmith. If it's new it'll probably be covered under warranty, but if it's a minor fix you might want to just pay to have the work done, so you're not without your gun. Sending a gun back to the factory takes quite awhile. My Taurus took six weeks and my Marlin took eight.

Did you tear it apart and clean it?  That's the first thing I would do.  Lube it back up and then see if the problem persists.  It could just be a stray filing in there.  Good luck, I loved the GP I had....maybe I should look for another! ;D

On a Smith  you buy endshake washers & install them yourself.  I did.  What about on a Ruger....anyone?

I have had this issue before with several different Ruger Security Sixes and an Astra 357 revolver once. It smoothed out eventually for me but still rubbed upon opening and closing.

There should be no rubbing once the cylinder is closed and locked in place, it’s just when the cylinder is opened and closed. It never affected operation of the gun for me; it just rubbed the bluing off the cylinder and forcing cone face (which I did find annoying). I never had this issue with any of the many Colts or Smiths I had.

If the gun is still under warranty, I would contact Ruger if it’s an issue for you. I lived with it until I later traded the revolvers after several years of service with no functional problems.

I tore it apart and gave it a good cleaning and lube.

The transfer bar seems to rattle when i shake the gun around though. I checked on my super redhawk and it shakes a bit on there too. Is this just normal for ruger revolvers or all revolvers with transfer bars?

I wouldn't worry too much about the tranfer bar rattling around in there.  It's normal.
