GBO Accounts under attack

Folks I recommend everyone update your passwords.
DO NOT USE PASSWORDS LESS THAN 8 CHARACTERS and use a mix of UpPeR aNd LOweR CaSE MixeD witH NuMberS like This:  ThiSis1ExamPLe
But make sure you write it down somewhere just incase:

Please note that all of these were just from one IP address and there are about 50 - 60 IP's in this attack so far and I dont think it is going to stop anytime soon with the new server being as fast as it is.

Being site admin can you not force a global password reset, or do you not have the capability with this site?

nope not a feature... I have added  new security features that will allow 3 login attempts then lock the account. After that you should get a link that will allow you to override it if you are a real person and have proper user name and password using SSL (secure login.)
I have also added a feature that will allow you to lock your account to your IP if you have a static or persistent IP and you can add multiple IP's if you like.  it also has a method for you the user to get around if need be.

Your firewall block IP address ranges?

If they are all form the same subnet blacklist them for a few days.

Or add a NULL route to your server that will drop the traffic.

As a result of this attack and the fact that it seems a lot of moderator accounts are being attacked and the damage someone could do logged in as a moderator I have gone thru the moderator list at length.

All moderators who have not logged in during the last two months were removed as moderators and their name removed from the forum so as to make those accounts less likely a target.

If you see this and are one of those who is no longer a moderator and really want to be and promise to remain active you can contact me AFTER you have gotten a new password and we'll discuss putting you back on the moderator list. Below is a list of names of those I removed as moderators due to lack of activity and/or the fact their accounts have been heavily targeted and they aren't posting to their assigned forums anyway.

Only problem with that is if he/they are smart enough to try and hack a server then I'm sure they are smart enough to ping off of another IP, if they are not already, and continuing their attacks.

If they are all form the same subnet blacklist them for a few days.

Or add a NULL route to your server that will drop the traffic.

Only problem with that is if he/they are smart enough to try and hack a server then I'm sure they are smart enough to ping off of another IP, if they are not already, and continuing their attacks.

Indeed.  Most such attacks come from botnets.  Basically droves of infected desktop PC's (most of which the owners have no clue are even infected).  The hacker can issue commands to the botnet as a whole or specific clients, often through an IRC channel.  If one gets blocked they typically will just have another start trying instead.

Might be a bot and if that is the case once the reply goes dead it might move on to another target. Most bots scan the internet for a signature (CMS and OS) it recognizes and launches an attack accordingly.   

It would be interesting to see if all the attacks are coming from the same subnet. The newer firewalls will recognize the HTTP traffic signature and slow their response time to a crawl

I have now changed my password to one that contains 17 numbers and letters. I bet that would be pretty hard to crack. I really don't know why I even bothered for the simple fact that I am not a mod and even if my account was hacked there could really be no damage done. Take care Dale

The bot probably has the pre programmed thousands of common passwords, including "password" that is the most popular. As Matt said, the safest is alpha, numeric, upper/lower case, and symbol. They will ping day and night so keep your password tight.
