Coloring Brass
« on: December 18, 2003, 05:23:56 PM »
I hope I'm not too far off topic..

Can anyone tell me what the modern name is for "Salt of Nickel"? I would like to make up a solution to dye cartridge brass red. The formula calls for Potassium Chlorate, Nickel Carbonate, Salt of Nickel and Distilled Water. This formula was taken out of Clyde Bakers "Modern Gunsmithing" book.

I'll bet Mr. Felix could help me. Are you still out there?
Thank you.....

Nickel Ammonium Sulfate {NiSO4 (NH4)2 SO4 • 6H2O} is used in electroplating metals.  Possibly this chemical is what Baker was referring to.
