Let's get some interesting topics going here.
« on: February 04, 2011, 06:36:56 AM »
Since the man with the gray beard moved politics out of here this forum has all but died.  What did you talk about when you went with Grandpa and sat around the old pot bellied stove?  We talked about the weather, the price of Tobacco, the price of schoats, who got beat up by their old lady, and politics.

Well we talked about the weather.  No one seems interested in the price of tobacco or schoats.

OK, so who knows, who got beat up by their old lady?

Have fun Yall, got to go get my snowmachine.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Not True!!!! We talked about other stuf :Pf....... Though the price of tobacco does irritate me. I would like a thread of "Cheap Beer". Ya know, the 12% ABV that is a dollar and some change for a 24 oz can. Now that would be drama!!!  ;D

Well contrary to popular belief around here. When folks get together around the "ole pot bellied stove" or a table in a small cafe, they usually end up talkin about POLITICS & OR RELIGION. But not this pot bellied stove anymore. Oh well. A forum with a different name has been created to discuss the exact same things that were discussed on this one. I expect this one will die now, and the new one will flourish.

Lets try this for starters- Subsidising the corn growers in the midwest by causing us to burn 10% ethanol in our tanks. It may go up to 15% soon. What effects will this have on our economy, engines both 2 and 4 cycle. etc.

Subsidizing the farmers is part of the problem. Subsidizing for farmers is a politically correct title for "Farm Welfare" which is a much bigger "welfare program" than the welfare program you see in the slum areas of anywhere USA.
Cutting out farm subsidies would be a great start at balancing the budget. UHOH. Politics. Sorry. Goodbye.

Could never figure out why corn was the selected crop for ethanol. Brazil has been using the remnants of sugar cane production for theirs. Wouldn't the waste from sugar beets production be just as viable? How much research was put into it??

I really don't think a suitable alternative fuel will actually apear any time soon. The oil tycoons just aren't going to allow it.

We've had a specific forum to discuss Politics almost as long as we've had forums on this site. True I had it mixed with Second Amendment discussion cuz when it was started that was what I expected to primarily be the topics of such discussion.

This forum came along much later. It was requested by the NEF guys who came here from the former Marlin NEF Talk Forums. It was to be "their" place for that group of folks to talk off topic ie non NEF related subjects.

This forum was never intended to be a politics or religion forum. Over time the NEF guys just fit into the GBO family and while there is still an entire section devoted to them the guys who post there also post all over the site generally speaking and no longer consider themselves outsiders as I'm sure they kinda did when they first arrived here.

Over time this forum mutated into something far different than it was intended to be and yes many folks seemed to begin thinking it was the ONLY forum on the site and no matter what the subject wanted to post it here. Lots of such got moved to the proper forum. Then somehow for some reason it drifted into almost exclusively politics and religion.

I don't mind the discussion of politics so long as the rules are followed but there is a far older forum specifically to discuss that subject and it should be the one used for that generally speaking.

The members of this site have proven they cannot discuss religion and stay on topic and follow the rules. It always degenerates into personal attacks and name calling and the actual discussion of religion gets tossed aside as folks fight, name call and make personal attacks. I'd love to have a place here for CHRISTians to discuss religion but time and time again ya proved to me ya can't do so within the parameters established for discussion on this site. I feel the devil not GOD was being served by those forum toward the end before I stopped them. I will not allow that. If they don't glorify GOD and serve HIS purposes then I won't allow such forums here.

No argument from me. I like it quiet and peaceful here. There's plenty of stuff to talk about without arguing and calling names. Besides, religion and pollitics are two things you'll never ever get folks to agree on. Better to agree that you disagree and leave it at that. It's also about time folks got it through their heads that we all are but guests here and should act accordingly. :)

grandpa and i used to sit around and share a six pack and watch the bugs fly into the zapper.   i cant tell ya the zappers actually reduced the amount of bugs, but we sure had a blast watching them roast; especially when a big juicey one got in there.   lol    the old man used to love having a beer with ya more than just about anything.
when i was in the process of leaving the army, grandpa and dad came down to see the base before i left.  we had one last get together before i left, and grandpa sat right there with me and my buddies having a few cool ones.    it was   simple, not too eventful, but a great moment none-the-less.

Well, my grandad had plenty of stories.  The good thing about it was that they always changed with each telling.  Granma always told him to quit lying!  He called it "prevaricating"! ;D  He was one of the only people I ever knew that thought Jimmy Carter was a great president too!  Mostly we butted heads quite a bit and got lots of hard work done on the farm.  I learned plenty of alternate ways to fix things, earned a degree in a certain type of engineering from him in those years too.
Which lie got to you so that you refuse Him???

Back to ethanol, I do quite a bit of work around those plants and I see them as a total waste. Using ethanol in vehicles causes a lower MPG rating. Where is the savings? The only good thing to come from the ethanol plants is the dried distillers grains make superior deer bait. I'd like to try em on hogs.

We tried that once.  It was a cold winter day when they delivered a large wagon loaded with distilled corn (mash?).   It was warm and steaming in the cold air.   We unloaded it into the feed troughs for our cattle.   Within the hour those cattle were drunk as hootowls.  We didn't order anymore after that.

Well, I was one of the originals that came here from Marlin Talk when it closed down.  To tell the truth, I can't remember exactly what we used to talk about, but there were some interesting folks that migrated over here.  I think I remember some that are still here, but a lot of them are gone.

I tried a couple of other primarily gun sites and they mostly turned out to be cussing contests, with very little serious thoughts.  I've tried different political sites and most of them didn't do much for me.  Maybe the attraction here was and still is that many of us have some common interests and philosophies.

Anybody know any good jokes?

Porch sittin' with a beer is a good bonding tradition. And you don't have to worry about driving home. I read some reviews on the Stack beer. I tried one out of sheer curiosity. It is definately 12 percent! Flavor......? Hard to tell as your mouth goes numb after the first sip. It has a delicate blend of fruityness and ethanol. Kind of like octane booster with a sliver of lime. First beer I have ever tried that needed a chaser. Very interesting indeed! I still enjoy a vodka Redbull some evenings but Stack beer takes the cake! I will soon enjoy vodka redbull again when my tastebuds grow back from the alcohol nuke the Stack exploded in my mouth.  Oh, and you might want to buy two on your first trip to the store because after the first you should not be going anywhere but to bed! That is if you can still find your bedroom following 24oz's of Stack.
