Another irritating thing is to answer the phone and the 1st thing that you hear is, WHOS THIS?

How many times lately have I stopped myself in mid-conversation to listen to myself speaking horribly! I used to Pride myself on what I believed to be technically correct language. I am slipping badly.

Each of you have "hit the nail on the Proverbial head" in so many of your posted words and sayings.

The words, names, and some phrases that currently gall me deeply are:

"Green"; "Going Green"; "Global Warming"; "Al Gore"; "Barack Hussein Obama"; "Nancy Pelosi"; "Harry Reid"; "Cap and Trade"; "carbon offsets"; "carbon footprint"; "Democrats"; "Liberals"; "Socialists"; "Muslims"; "Terrorists"; "Extremists"; "Welfare"; "Social Security"; "Medicare/Medicaid"; "ObamaCare"; "Exclusions"; "Entitlement Generations [and PLURAL too dammit!!!]"; "United Nations"; "George Soros"; "William (Bill) Jefferson Clinton"; "Hillary Rodham Clinton"; "Gun Ban"; "Anti-gun"; "Sarah Brady"; "Jim Brady";

I think I will quit at that list for now...anybody want to play a rousing game of Bulls**t Bingo?

When people say that they "could care less". It's "couldn't care less". Just think about it for a second and you'll realize just how dumb it sounds to say that you "could care less"

Our 5 year old son has speech problems that we're working on, but he said "pease" and "kank you" before he could put a sentence together. What happened to being polite?
Women customers should not be referred to as "guys" by servers at restaurant or anyone else in the service industry.

Should be just "Water Heater" because no matter if the water in it is hot or cold, when it turns on, it will heat the water.

Well in reality its a hot water heater/storage tank.So in effect everytime it cuts on to maintain temp it is heating hot water . On demand heaters are exceptions. There are heaters that don't take the temp above what would be considered hot water. There are heaters that make super hot water or even steam.
But on a drawing WH in most cases stands for wall hydrant not water heater so I guess back in the day they added the H to WH to signify water heater not wall hydrant .

I personally don't have a problem with to many words or phrase's. But this topic reminds me of when my mother was alive. When she went thru a checkout at a store, and the clerk would tell her,''Have a nice day'', her reply was, don't tell me what kind of a day to have!! I'll have a lousy day if I want to. gypsyman

Misuse of the word, "need," sticks me in the ear like a nail. If you "need" something, you benefit from attaining it. It is good for you. You gain something that you require or that would be bad for you if you didn't get it. You "need" food. You "need" money.

To say about a murderer, "He 'needs' to die" is a joke. It certainly would not be good for him to die. It might be good for everybody else if he did, in which case one should say, "We need for him to die."

45-70, would you consider it a deal, if you paid .04 a gallon less for gas, but your car got 3mpg less, because it was an ethynal blend?
I understand where your coming from. Here again, we're having a play on words. If buying something costs you more in the long run because it was cheaper, is it still a bargain? There are certain things I look at, and it might cost me a little more when I inatially buy something, but, because it serve's me better, or lasts longer, it's a deal, as compared to trying to save money in the first case. gypsyman

"Done fell out" Shortened to D.F.O. by care providers is to pass out. to lose consciousness.

"dominoe pain" "Abomimable pain" is abdominal pain

"smilin might jesus" is spinal meningitis

Those are the only ones I can remember right now that are suitable to post in a family oriented forum.

Not medical related but I always heard people talking about getting their wig busted. That means they are getting a haircut.

There are times that I call my son "buddy".
There are times that I address him by his full name.
He completely understands the difference in circumstances.

Of course, "buddy" probably has varied meanings depending on where you are.
Back in Lower Alabama, if you ever heard someone call another person "buddy", a fight was probably about to happen.

I totally agree. A kid calling their parents by name is ridiculous and, to me, insulting. As to inlaws, I really think it's a matter of respect and love when my daughter-in-law calls me dad. Now "dad" is quite differant than "father" in my mind. I don't think I'd feel right if she called me father.

Two that really get me that I hear on the news almost every day: In reference to a collision between a car and pedestrian, they'll say "the driver ran him over." Huh! What ever happened to grammer? Also, "the criminal pleaded guilty." Past tense of the verb plead is PLED. My old English teacher was really hard on us back in the day, but we learned that which is not even taught in schools today. SPIRITHAWK. I totally agree. Another irritating thing is the newscasters and the paper wil say, when theres a bad wreck, caused by snow, ice, rain, etc. Almost all are really caused by folks driving too fast for conditions. POWDERMAN.

The proper word is regardless... meaning without regard.

That was going to be my gripe but you beat me to it. I think the non-word "irregardless" is a result of people confusing the word "regardless" and "irrelevant". But it's still wrong, kind of like saying,"I'm not doing nothing."

Irregardless and imflammable are both in the dictionary. What a messed up language we have.

Unfortunately irregardless is the same as saying regardless, no matter how irritating.
Unfortunately imflammable does mean flammable, you wouldn't guess how I figured that one out.

Or when politicians say they are going to "redouble" their efforts...seems like their effort was only half-a$$ed in the first place so they have a lot of ground to make up.

I worked with a guy who would say at some point during a phone conversation with a customer, "I'll be honest with you..."
So we finally asked him at what time during the conversation did he decide to tell the truth.
