I can pick a date for the shoot, but , first i need a name for it.........CONYANRVC&MS,  that stands for: Confederate only NO Yankees allowed New River Valley Cannon & Mortar Shoot.

The War of Yankee agression lasted about 4 years.  The War of Confederate agression never seems to end.   ::)

If you wait until the last minute you may force some folks to cancel plans they'd made previously (except for the Yankees that aren't invited).

Suggest making a primary and alternate date.
What do you mean by last minute? If i start a topic for the shoot, let's say, first week in April, that gives people a month before the May 7th date of the shoot. If they can't make a decision in a months worth of time, too bad.

If you look, you'll see I've already made plans for the Memorial (the Yankee one) Day weekend and the 4th weekend of June.  So for SOME folks last minute has already passed.  ;D   Life is more complicated for some than others - plan for it.

I'm probably not the only one on here that gets tired of your "Philosophy CRAP"
I've fired cannons and mortars long before the internet was around, and don't need a BOZO like you telling me what to do.
If you wonder why i didn't attend your last two shoots, well, you are a philosopher, figure it out.

OK!

We've heard from the landlords, and the 4th Almost Annual (we missed one) New River Valley Mortar and Cannon Shoot (4AANRVMACS) WILL BE on Saturday the 11th of June, 2011!   :D ;D :D ;D :D ;D :D ;D

Last time we shot from ABOUT 9am (maybe 10) for a couple of hours in the morning, waited for the rain to stop and a couple of hours in the afternoon winding up about 3 or 4.  Lunch inbetween.

Is that a good plan for this time?

Suggestions for course of fire?  (Which cannons/mortars when & what competitions.)

I sure do envy all the choices you folks in the East have. We don't seem to have much going on with shoots in California. If anyone knows of any in California please post it. The shoots in February and June near Arcadia are history. A pox on those who caused this. >:( >:(

Randell -

Get something started!  Find ONE other person that is interested, a minimum of ONE cannon or mortar and go have FUN!

That IS how this one started.  It didn't exist, Lance kept bugging me to go shootin' and through Atmospheric Extraction the NRVMACS was initiated.  I found a friend at work who was interested and he provided his father-in-law's property for the shoot.

It works well at first if it is SMALL - you get to know eachother and you all work together to make sure it works and is safe.

Excellent job East Coast Moderater and a big thanks to Dale as well!!!  :D  :)
Your plan sounds perfect and was most impressed last year when you scheduled the rain during lunch.   8)

Good question as to the course of fire. Rampa Room Artillery & Little Seacoast will have some good ideas. I like DD's siege of Ft Pallet.  Nothing like a good bombardment.  Would it be helpfull for us to share what we are bringing?

Bruce - thanks!

Yes, give one and all a heads up on what cannons/mortars/gonnes will be brought!

We'll build lists of:
  • possible matches
  • cannons/mortars/etc likely to be brought
  • door prizes and awards (some ALREADY on hand for some time now)

If we work at it we'll get a pix or two in the 2012 calendar too.

This may also be an opportunity for trading things - cannon parts, moulds, lead/zinc etc.

well,  I like to shoot at sheet rock.
I will be bringing a 2.25 mountain rifle. 12 mountain howitzer if i finish it in time. 12lb csa mortar, 24lb tredegar mortar,  and a 24lb union coehorn mortar all full scale and bore.  maybe a few golfball mortars, and I am sure i will come up with a few surprizes between now and then. lol you never, know, trail will be full.  I am trying to come up with a way to make 12lb plaster paris rounds for the mountain howitzer that way I wont loose expensive mortar balls. and they will be safer for that shoot.

       what you bringing???

I have a tough choice - too many to choose from.

Nothing in the cannon category unless I make a base for my iron 1.75" Napoleon.  (I'd like to line it first though.)
Several options in golf-ball caliber.
A couple of hand gonne's.

Of course the 4.55" mortar and the 16-20-24oz sodapop bottle mortar (line thrower).

SubSailor suggested (last year) making targets like the opfor's cannons - counter battery firing competition.  Perhaps something timed.  I still have a print from which we could make plywood cutouts.

We should make a post for a target and we could 'lime' rings around it for a target.

ooooo, no timed, well at least for how fast you can shoot,,  not safe.  I follow 1-3 min rule with my gun . or try to. 1 min before i can load powder  after last shot, then cant fire gun till 3 mins after last shot. it makes people slow down and watch what they are doing. I know you can loose and eye with a small gun but you loose an arm with my guns. or your life.   keep an eye on govdeals.com, I saw 650 lunch trays go for 35 dollars the other day.  paper plates staple to a sheet of cardboard ot plywood.  for mortars. bring out a baby pool and fill it with water. everyone payes 5 dollars for a chance to shoot at the pool. and it keeps growing till someone hits it. and he whens the pot.  tho then he owes everyone a round  at the bar after the shoot is over. or dinner.

I absolutely agree with you on not having # of shots exceding a safe rate.  By timed I would allow one shot, but withing x minutes of announcing WHICH target - emphasis on setup and aiming.

We should also have a SAFETY officer for each 'iron shooting; only one shooting at a time.

An exception would be to hit the same target at the same time - but one team firing high angle, one low angle.

lots of options.

Hi Cat, how you been doin' lately, how's the old memory holdin' up? :(
Does this 'little seacoast' photo ring any bells for ya? :P   :) ;D :D

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Well in CW's defense I won't be bringing that particular piece of ordanance this year. I plan on bringing a couple of mortars ( an HMR can mortar and a Hern "full size" Coehorn in 2.25" bore)and my 2.25" Parrott Rifle by Dominic.  Anybody working on mortar contests?  VA Rifleman and I intend to donate a small prize to the winner of whatever contest materializes.  It would be nice if we could donate something to the property owners too, they're swell.
