Sierra 85 gr .243's
« on: February 07, 2011, 05:32:20 AM »
Been reading about the excellent results folks have been getting on deer with the Sierra 85 gr HPBT in .243 cal.I was curious if the same praise is given to the flat based version? The reason for the distinction is I really dont like boat tails. I've seen and have been told too many times that they lose their cores. Not much of a cor to a .243 to begin with so any such behavior is not so good. I shoot alot and although Barnes bullets are interesting, they are a bit rich for my budget. Anybody use them? Thanks!

The Sierra 85 bthp is a tougher bullet than the 85  gr sp bullet. The 85 Sp is more of a varmint bullet.

Having shot  8 whitetails and a dozen or so mule deer with that bullet I can attest to its effectiveness.  All were one shot kills at ranges from 50 to 250 yards. Sierra plainly markets these for thin skinned big game hunting...ie.  Gamekings.  They are wonderfully accurate and shoot very well in every rifle I've tried them in.  37.3 gr IMR 4064 and a CCI LR primer in my Federal cases will shoot in a honest half inch @ 100 yds all day  out of my old Savage 110 with a Weaver 6x scope.  I was shooting silhouettes at our clubs monthly shoot back in the late 70's when David Tubb was watching and  he asked my load.  He took my rifle  and shot 26 rams @500 meters in a row! He said he was going to build him one and use that load as it was clearlyan accurate one.

you will be more than happy with the BTHP Gamekings..  As stated the The Flat base is a Varmint bullet..  From what I played with them. they seem to Fragment very well.. Thats not a good thing for deer and such sized game..   The 85gr Gameking Holds together very well and a very accurate bullet..  I'm getting .400" to .250" 5 shot Groups @ 100 yards and .500" and under @ 200 yards from a Model 7 Remington..
