500 S&W
« on: February 07, 2011, 11:38:08 AM »
I was wondering about price of ammo and if it is worth getting.  I am working on a trade for it in a handi rifle.  Is the recoil real stiff?    Just wondering   thanks

Ammo prices for the 500 are ungodly high.  If you reload, it isn't too bad.  Recoil with factory loads is brisk to say the least.  Another problem is that ammo is not really easy to find.  If you don't rload, this caliber is not very user friendly.  To the reloader, it is great.  Mild to wild, recoil push to recoil thump, all yours with a simple load adjustment.

If I didn't reload for my 500 someone else would own it. I couldn't afford to shoot it.

The main advantages I see are the durability of the brass and that it can be used in some states primitive weaopns category. I think factory ammo runs close to $2 a cartridge. I find it to be very accurate, I am casting my own and handload, my loads run me about the same cost per shot as a 22 magnum  ;D ;D I use loads that duplicate 50/70 ammo, they killed elk and buffalo just fine. The 45/70 has a wider variety of ammo available, but unless they were side by side for the same price I would not choose the 45/70. If you have the chance for a good deal on a 500 I would not hesitate, unless you insist on factory ammo.

Factory ammo for the 500S&W is very expen$ive, the least expensive stuff is just under $2 a round, most is more, some a LOT more.  :o

Thanks for the replies.  I do not reload.  don't have the gear but i would like to.  I have an opportunity to trade a muzzleloader for this rifle so I might do it.  could be the start of some fun reloading!  thanks again   <>< del

If you enjoy shooting and can't afford a lot of factory loads, reloading is the way to go.  Not only money saving, it is very satisfying to make & shoot your own ammo.

+1 on what Pete just said.  I was stupid and didn't start reloading until last year.  I just bought a 500 barrel from frgerald, and am getting my dies, brass and bullets on order.  I think it is going to be another "Hoot ta Shoot".

wreckhog, I haven't got mine together yet.  I don't know anything yet for sure, but I'm thinking the same thing.  How bad can it be in a rifle if it's a handgun round?  Regardless, I'll just load them to "comfortable".

It ain't terrible but in a rifle it's a whole other horse.
It does have some kick.
Not as much as my 450 Marlin barrel (IMO) but you do notice it.

That entirely depends on your load!!!!

My 500 XTPs moving out at close to 1600 put a hurting on you for certain!!! Don't shoot so accurate, but get your attention when the hammer falls!!!

Tim's got some 700's going 1300+ IIRC I'll wager dems da same!!!  LOL

The 700gr Ranger Ricks run 1433fps, as CW said, the 500S&W isn't the most accurate H&R chambering, but plenty good enough for its intended range.   ;)

Fantastic!
Shoot some of the ammo to get empty brass, unless youve got the other half box of empties. If so, just shoot a few to get the feel of factory loads and save them for now. Get back to us with some measurement of the fire-formed case mouth dia. (the very front lip will likely be turned in a bit from the factory crimp; roll that out straight with the case) to see what dia. lead bullet is likely to fit.
We'll find a way to get you loading this, hopefully on the cheap for now, in short order.

Just want to add my .02 cents. I have a 500 because it is legal for deer in indiana but the 45/70 is not. I also have a .44/.445 SM but something about the 500 and i actually had it first.

You will have to reload for this hog........You can get  into the 500 reloading for minimal investment and reloads make it very affordable to shoot. I personally load 400 grain cast bullets from Missouri bullet company over 12 grains of trail boss.   A very mild load and fun to shoot. I believe I paid about 41 dollars for 200 bullets. Add the primer/powder cost and I guess it runs in the range of about 30 cents per round. Maybe a bit more but still a whole lot less than the 2 dollar plus range of factory ammo.

You will enjoy it.

Well, I had the 500 for about 7 hours and a guy bought me a new 444 handi and traded me out of the 500.  My 15 year old son just had to shoot it before i got rid of it.  he is hooked.  He is going to buy him one.  The recoil is nothing.  About like 3 inch magnums in my 870.  I was thinking it would be very stiff but it was not bad, VERY loud, but it was fun to shoot.  Now got to find out some reloads for the 444.  <>< del
