The big mound is a territorial marker(boundary). You probably have several colonies in that one area.
Time to start piling your own mud, if you have the traps, set it heavy. By gang setting, you can catch a bunch before they know whats going on.
Sounds like you might be in for some fun. Good luck!

Thats where making castor mounds works so well. With 15 slides, you can catch beaver by setting the slides, but it can be hit or miss as to which slides they decide to use.
I go and make my mounds at the slides or pull outs theat seem best(or easiest to get at) for me. That way I am assured of where they will go.
Mike and I set up an area one time,8 330s in less than 100 feet.Next morning all traps were full. That spot has been known as-8for 8,ever since.

I just dip a stick in the lure ,and put a small glob on the stick(about the size of a finger nail) and put the stick on top of my mound.

Mark,I just looked at how you set your traps, again.I noticed(funny I didn't catch this before) you set with your trigger on top.I flip that baby over and go with the trigger on the bottom. The trigger is bent into an -m-, and when the 330 is half submerged, the beaver has a clear, open window to the mound.Nothing whatsoever to impede it,from getting to the mound(or so they think).

Haven't posted in ages but what the heck.  Haven't done any spring beaver trapping in quite a while but it looked like good conditions for this spring so I gave it a shot.  I used only 5 330's and set only 3 areas close to home.  As for the sets used, only Boggy's castor mound set was used with castor or the little remaining Moundmaster I  that I still had from a few years back.  I was looking for spring tourist beavers using the river to look for new accomadations.  Nine as of this mornings check, (two) one will stretch about 60-65 and the other one in the low 50's.  Since I can only trap designated trout streams this month my options are limited.  eg one river that's close to home.   It was good to get out again and I probably will do some fall early winter trapping this coming season.  It is good to see some familiar posters from years back.  Take care out there and enjoy every minute on the line.   ;)

Lee,I actually took a small plastic  toboggan into one spot this spring. It sure made hauling beaver and traps a lot easier.Putting that garden cultvator to use also--by hooking the short rope with the cultivator--pulling was pretty easy.
I just wish I had another 100 beaver to use it on.
And I sure do love the smell of castor.
