New Remington 504 Rimfire?
« on: December 19, 2003, 08:41:55 AM »
Have you read the review in NRA Rifleman Mag about Remington's new 504 .22 rimfire?  It looks like they designed another "for the masses" firearm.  It is a nice looking gun, but when you really get into it, I doubt it will ever win many friends who shoot seriously.  It is pretty light, has a short, clamped on barrel, and no recoil lug.  Reported group sizes were not not impressive, either.  What do think?   Blamethewind    :(

I read the article and I as also disappointed in what I read.  Pressed and squeezed barrel and no recoil lug didn't impress me either.  Using the bolt root of the bolt handle as the locking lug also leave me cold.

WHOA!!!!!

Gentlemen:

Before jumping to any conclusions, please let the market decide if this rifle is worthy of success or not.

So the barrel is clamped-in. Big Deal!

So are the barrels of the Anschutz 2000 series match rifles, as are the barrels on Sako's excellent Finnfire, which just received a very positive review in one of the shooting magazines.

I, and an increasing number of fellow silhouetters, own a Sako Finnfire and have zero complaints.

As far as the groups achieved with 3 types of ammo, well, we are all aware that no to .22 lr barrels like the same brand of ammo, and that ALL .22's require some tuning to optimize their accuracy.

Like any other new product, this new rifle will sink or swim on its own. It is not fair to condemn an American product seeking to compete against the Finn and German giants before it is even out on the market.

Good posting Arizona Jake.  It seems as though everyone is ready to condemn the rifle from just reading the A.R. article.

I was just doing a checkin on rimfire central and see that there is a 4 page post on it there, of course mostly condemning a rifle that no one has seen yet.  One post was interesting though - the writer indicates, without actually saying it, that he is a Remington employee and is knowledgeable about the 504 and its design.  According to him there are numerous errors in the A.R. article.

You are absolutely right - lets get it on the market, get our hands on it and wring it out.  If it is good then HOORAY for Remington.  If not then the they won't sell and will be gone from the market for in a few years.  Personally I am glad to see Remington giving the market a try.  Competition improves the breed - it makes all of the other manufacturers have to try a little harder and in the end it is the consumer who benefits.

Sure, give it a chance, then.......

Yes, boys it does deserve a chance.  But, I still feet the big winners will be the gunsmiths trying to make it play like the owners want it to and surely could with some simple design inclusions.   I would be very happy to see Remington put out a winner that would compete with Anchutz, Sako, etc. I just don't think this will be it. Time will tell.  Blamethewind.

Hi.  I was at two different Gander Mtn. stores last month here in Pennsylvania, and both of them had these rifles.  They are pretty nice...but Gander is charging full retail $709.  I think the design is pretty darned good, but time will tell.  I'm glad to see this rifle come along, but for the price tag it has to be as good as a Sako to compete.  Seems like they could make this rifle less expensively; some of the money is in the stock, which is pretty nice.  The stock is very much like a slimmed Rem 700 classic.

Hay fellas - didn't the last Remington 22 lr they produced come out pretty good.  I thought it looked great and shot as well or better than stock 10/22s.  I think the 22 mag version also shot extremely well.  I would say to give it a chance - the last one works OK, I would like to think this one should too.  In addition, any factory that chambers its bolt action classics in an older european caliber, like the 8mm, has to know what they are doin'.  Just my 2 cents worth though.  Mikey.

The price of the Rem 504 at Gander Mtn. suddenly dropped from $709 to $599.  I have seen them advertised around $550 now.

Hey Guys,

Just thought I would bump this thread back up and ask if anyone has tried one of these rifles out in silhouette. I'd love to have another Remington as a back up rifle for competition.

I also have a rulebook question since I lost mine and I know some of you guys out there now that rulebook like the back of your hands.  Would one of these be legal in Hunter with an aftermarket barrel?  Also if it had a heavier after market barrel it would have to shoot in standard correct?

Thanks much,

Billy

The requirement to duplicate the previous, factory bbl specs has been gone from the hunter rules for a long time.

As it stands now, any bbl that meets the 26" max lgth restriction, has a 'hunting style' taper and allows you to make the 8.5 lb sb weight limit is acceptable.

The couple of 204s that I've handled had triggers that could -- at best -- be described as no better than adequate. YMMV

Medbill,

I do like mine but will stick with my annie's for the matches, put a lilja barrel on mine and it shoots better groups with Eley and SK now, se my post on rimfire central

Genphideaux,

You'd know more than I about the trigger...
They weren't my rifles to play with!

Thanks guys, gonna give John Blauvelt a shout and see what he'd doing with them.  http://www.jcbgunsmith.com/

Genphideaux, man that was a long thread but great info you posted.  Thank you.  Were you getting those groups after the Lija install or before?  The Lija sounds like the way to go if I can get a used one at a good price.

Medbill,

Those were with the stock barrel, the lilja allowed me to shoot more brands of match ammo and had even better groups, this was a big concern for me if I was to use it in a match.
