What should be read here is that a school district is getting one million plus dollars. Period. If I had a student there I would not let them be enrolled in the class.

If it was me and it was at all possible I would be removing them from that school and enrolling them into a different one. It bugs me that we really don't have a national language but the government and even illegals expect use to conform to their wants. Last time someone said something around me in spanish I told them this is America, learn to speak english.

My granddaughter had to learn spanish in grade school. YES, this is America, we speak ENGLISH here. A 2nd language should be a choice, not a demand. My disabled neighbor needed a ride to the food stamp office so we took him. Posted on the wall was an invitation to a class to learn ENGLISH as a SECOND language.

English is the official language of India. Anyone educated in India has to learn English. They have 5-7 major different languages, so to unite the country, and it being a former Brittish colony and therefore a member of the Brittish commonwealth, they must learn English if they get an education. English is the official airline, scientific, and internet language of the world. To graduate high school in Germany, English must be passed. So why is it not the official language of America? 800 million people in the world can speak English.

I can see where this is going. Today kids are going to be forced to learn their language tommorow they will be forced to learn their religion someday soon after that they will be forced to practice the religion

You all have valid points . But it isn't a bad thing to understand what they say . We spent a week on the Outer Banks when my daughter was in school . She had a friend with her and both spoke French. Everyday there were kids and parents from Canada that talked French between themselves. They spent the week cutting down all around and America in general. After about 4 days of it when their whole group was near my daughter and her friend goes into this long conversation about the conduct of the others and how stupid it was for them to think they could talk French and no one would hear or understand , did i mention they were speaking French ? Well they got out of the pool and never came back while we were there. So again its not so bad to understand their language , they do ours

My problem with this mandatory class is that it incorporates culture from the region along with the language. This will include teaching of islam and sharia law. That is disturbing to say the least. The Feds dangling money to get cash strapped schools to indoctrinate our youth is beyond wrong.

. We already have social studies and other languages available. Make it an elective and let the parents have a say in it.

If anything is manditory, Spanish should be taught. All of South American except Brazil, and a few small coastal and island countries in the Carribbian speak Spanish as well as the Phillipines and of course Spain. It is the 3rd most spoken language behind Mandrian Chinese and English. Arabic is further down the list.
We also have more interaction with Hispanics. Might help us identify illegals.

I never said it was a bad thing to learn another language. What I'm more concerned with is the fact that they are being FORCED to take these language classes. If it was at the students discretion whether or not they took that class than so be it.

What needs to be taught is mandatory English. Cultures only thrive with one language. Look around. Elective second language education is not the issue. Mandatory is.

LOL! I wish they had never learned to speak English in India. Now, when you need to do business with a company over the phone................You get an Indian, and their English and mine just aren't the same

I am an Arabic speaker, reader, writer, and one-time government "expert" on such things. I have taught my kids a little Arabic, a little Somali, and a little Greek (current and koine) as a matter of course. So I am not opposed to the learning of any language, or culture. Every country I've lived in apart from the US has a national language requirement for their students. And Arabic was taught at the Mosque for those students interested, much like kids can learn Hebrew at the local Synagogue in their neighborhood here in the US.

Yet another reason why a federal department of education is complete and total waste of money. Give the $ back to the parents, dissolve the department. If the parents of that district want their students to learn Arabic, and want to fund it themselves through local taxes or a bond, good to go. Absolutely no reason whatsoever a federal agency needs to be involved here.

... but I have a feeling this is not in response to parental request.

Dont think your kids are being indoctrinated? Just walk though a typical public school here in Texas, read some of their home work sometime, look at some of the "projects" they are assigned to do, listen to some of the things being said by their teachers, read a few text books sometime.

I was on patrol last night and went to check a couple of alarms on one elementry school and one high school in a city where there are about 60 different facility locations. In the elementry school, EVERYTHING was in spanish. Had I not known the words for men and bathrooms in spanish I wouldnt have been able to use the restroom while I was there. There were displays on the walls through out the school about diversity. Just one little thing was missing...I didnt see anything about American History or American Icons! At the highschool, after disarming the alram, since it was a slow night, I picked some papers up that were obviously essay type work regarding students opinions of illegal immigration. I was shocked on a few counts. First off it looked like something written by a 3rd grader from a english, grammer, punctuation and writing stand point. Never would have guessed a high schooler wrote it!!! After reading about a dozen of them and almost puking in the process, I couldnt believe the crap I was reading. There are no words in the english language that can begin to discribe the travisty I saw.

On another note, I have had long talks with my nephew and his sister who just graduated high school. I was stunned that she will be spending her first year of college taking remedial courses in math and english before she can even begin taking freshman level college courses of instruction. My nephew was about as ignorant on the amendments to the constitution and why they were made and what they were supposed to achieve as one could possibly be. I dont know what kids are supposed to accomplish in high school but one thing is for sure its obviously not an education!

I was considering getting my certification renewed and going back into teaching, but there is no way I could survive in that career field no matter how open minded I am. If I am going to be a teacher, I want to teach not program!!!

In Va when I was in school you were told that to graduate from a college prep curc. school you had to have 2 years of spanish or french. In reality you had to be accepted to a college to graduate with a college prep cruc. and the school I went to only had Spanish and french. I got early acceptance to 3 colleges and never took either.
So in reality if they set a standard and only offer one choice then in effect they force the issue . It can be done on a school by school basis .

From Huffington post:"A plan to make lessons in Arabic and Arab culture mandatory for students in some Texas schools has been put on hold, following feedback from parents.

Two Schools in the Mansfield Independent School District planned to incorporate Arabic and Arab culture into every aspect of their curriculum. Students in two other schools in the district would have had the option to pursue similar studies."

"Editor's note: This story was updated to reflect the school district's multiple statements on the story. Planned classes at some schools were initially described as mandatory, but subsequently the district said that there would be no mandatory classes and put the plan on hold." Sounds to me like the district began backing off and saying the classes would be optional before scrapping the plan all together.

This line also stood out:
"Some parents had concerns that Islam would be included in the curriculum, but an official stressed that the curriculum would not be about religion, but about Arabic language and culture."

Is it even possible to seperate islam and arabic "culture"?

It all boils down to we the people, NOT needing the dept of education on a federal level. Really want to get your local school districts in a scream?? All it would take is for parents to keep their kids home for a week. They would loose quite a bit of federal funding dollars. Don't know how much it is per head, but i'll bet you could find out easy enough by contacting your schoolboard.
