Heard a S&W Rumor
« on: February 08, 2011, 11:03:50 AM »
Any truth to the rumor that S&W is going to eliminate the trigger lock on their guns in the near future?    RRM

And were bought out by the company with the patent on the locks.

Maybe they  finally caught on that there are raging hoards of people just like me that will NEVER buy another new Smith until they weld up that stupid hole by the cylinder latch.   Ya think?

But then, maybe not.  They probably have all the customers they want.................want to buy a bridge?

I would say 50/50. If too many reports come in that the lock failed in a shooting it might tilt the balance.

I gotta wonder why anyone cares.  You have locks on your door knobs, car doors, computers (passwords) yada yada yada.  If you don't like them................don't use the locks.  There are a lot more important things in life to get bent about  than using a voluntary lock on a gun.......like keeping your guns, the jacking up of gas prices, and anti-american president etc.

Yes, but I have to believe times are a little different now. At least a little. I would love to see the locks go away. I think they serve no purpose to a responsible person and, yes, is insulting to most gun owners.

Rat Rod, I really don't see what all the fuss is about.  I drink my coffee black but I don't get all bent out of shape if a restaurant has cream and sugar on the tables.  As another poster suggested if you don't like the lock don't use it.

For me the lock isn't a big deal. I never engaged it on the Smith I had. I miss the exposed hammer though, just something I was used to seeing. My only thought was what if you lock your revolver and missplace the key. I thought about having a key made to replace the "eyeglass" screwdriver on my Leatherman just in case. I got rid of my Smiths with the key and now just have exposed hammer models. Just personal preference.   Jerry J.

The new model 63 my brother so generously gave me for Christmas has the lock, and it is an exposed hammer gun. I fished around in the box and never came up with the key. That's just fine with me. I also took a bunch of gun locks down to the police station and donated them to their firearms safety program as my firearms are secured, unloaded, and no small children in the house. I was thinking of contacting Smith and Wesson about sending a key but decided against it. My sister-in-law bought the gun and I just didn't want any chance of a cross-reference to the firearm and possible problems.

The keyhole isn't near as ugly as that cross bolt safety Winchester and Marlin put on their rifles. I guess a guy could fill in the hole with tub calk or something!!!!

The key safety does not bother me at all.  I can look past that.  But if it saves one childs life thats a big plus for having it.  CZY

I have two new S&W's a model 57 and a model 58 and they both have it.  I did get almost $500 off on each revolver so i can live with the key safety. My new 2005 springfield armory 1911a1 GI. Mil-Spec has it anyhoo.

There are some models with out the lock made. A dealer told me he can order certian J frames without the lock. Seems some police don't care for the lock either.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I would be willing to guess that if they had a high yield contract that ordered X number of units they would make the lock disappear on those units. We just ordered 4 new fleet vehicles and they were nearly 10 percent below MSRP and were delivered via truck right to our door, so to speak, straight from the factory. I wonder if Smith may have a couple tapered barrles for the Model 10 packed away somewhere? Humm........

Here is a 625 with the old style thumb latch. I keep it in the safe, along with a bunch of dash-twos and five screws.

I always thought this(the locks) came about during the Clinton rein of terror? Who would want to patent those darn useless things?
