Looking to go deep cover.. Ruger LCP ?
« on: February 08, 2011, 12:53:30 PM »
World seems to be getting worse every day. i'm looking to go deep cover and carry, even in church...since that seems to be a new "target of opportunity" for crazies.
I was looking at a Ruger LCP today.  Now, I did hear that when they first came out they had a few teething troubles, so can you give me an update before I buy ?
Accuracy, dependability, function ?  Will it digest most ammo ?  What good defensive ammo works best ?

do you have one..if so, would you go that way again ?

I'm rather fond of mine!  Ball ammo is good to go for practice and the Golden Sabers feed great for daily carry.  They have worked out the issues, thanks to the R&D they forced on their customers.  It disappears in a front pocket pretty well too.  It's a point-and-shoot gun, don't expect much for sights.  It's easier to conceal for me than my 637 airweight too, much thinner.
Which lie got to you so that you refuse Him???

Mine's loaded with +P 100 grain hardcast flatpoints from Buffalo Bore.  I know it's still not much of a stopper, but maybe a deterrent.

I have one and really like it.  So far has digested everything I have fed it w/o any issues.  One of my boys has one and has had no problems with his either.

Mine is ALWAYS in my pocket loaded w/ Hornady Critical Defense.  I have found the Uncle George wallet holster to be superb.  http://unclegeorgeswalletholster.com

I doubt very much you would regret the purchase of a LCP.  And yes, I definitely would do it again.   :)

I've had a LCP for a year or so.  No problems or complaints.  Very reliable.  I prefer FMC 95Gr. (penetration) or Buffalo bore hard cast (non +P).  It doesn't shoot a accurately as my J frame .38 BUT it is alot more comfortable to carry.  You almost don't know it's with you!!!

Even bought one myself.  Keeping mine loaded with ball ammo.  Don't see depending on a HP at that power level and ball with penetrate best.   Looked at a new LC9 last month.  Most likely upgrade when they prove themselves.

I've carried one since they first hit the shelves.  Have it on me all day every day.  Put a Crimson Trace laser on it and it shoots better than expected.  Mine was the first generation which had problems.  Sent it back and got a hat and spare magazine for my trouble.  Turn around was less than two weeks from the time I sent it in until I got it back.  Haven't had a problem with any ammo so far.....

I have one that I picked up in july 08,  I carry it on duty as a back-up in a vest holster, off duty sometimes in a fobus.  It went back to the factory for its recall and got the diamond stamp.  When I first got it I picked up various ammo to try and had some issues with wolf, both ftf and leaving it in the chamber.  Ive fired wolf again since without problem.  Im required to carry federal hydra shock in it both on and off duty and will say that it has run perfect with this ammo.  If I could could change one thing it would have a last shot hold open but over all I would do it again,  its flat and doesnt produce a buldge and nice to have when going for a run or hiding in dress clothes.  The role of the lcp may be changing though as I picked up an lcr .357 yesterday.

The LCP has been well received as another option in the mini .380 market. A couple of guys I know have them and are happy with them. The size and weight are perfect for carrying when absolute concealment is a must! I've been carrying P32s and P3ATs since the early 90s. With a pocket clip or a pocket holster they just disappear. Love mine.

That little Ruger pinches my finger when I pull the trigger...I'm looking at the Sig, seems to fit me better and the action and trigger are much smoother...

I do like the little Sig-----------------but, it's a bit heavier than the P3AT or the LCP.

Another option is the Micro Eagle.  My brother bought one, and loves it.  It will feed anything he has tried so far.

Love mine, and I use Hornady Critical Defense.

I have had mine for over a year. It has fired probably somewhere in excess of 500 flawless rounds. I first broke it in with some winchester white box fmj, Remington UMC fmj, and 50 rnds of fmj from a local basement manufacturer. It worked great with everything. In checking function before I started carrying it I shot Speer Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber, Winchester PDX1, Hornady Custom XTP, and Critical Defense. I settled on the Hornady Critical Defense for carry. All were acceptably accurate. Non showed any functioning problems.
AS STATED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL I do not shoot +P ammunition in it. Although there is no such thing as a 380+P  SAAMI standard (only 9MM, 38Spcl. and 45ACP), some smaller companies sell what they call
+P. Probably either over SAAMI pressure standards, or at least loaded to the edge.
With modern bullets, in accepted standard loadings the 380 will provide satisfactory performance for self defense.
The LCP is a great little pocket pistol. Mine is put in a DeSantis Superfly holster, and carried in my front pocket. Sometimes I even forget it is there.
I do carry a larger firearm when clothing permits, but I feel confident in the little Elsie Pea.

  Thanks guys..
The LCP sounds like what I want..but now flintlock raises a question...   Although it nestles in my hand comfortably..will it work OK ?  I have very large hands (XXX-large gloves when I can find them)..will the LCP cause "pinch problems" ?

As one of the posters who said I forge it's there let me explain a little further.
Mentally, and psychologically  I know I have a gun on me. I always do!
Physically, I don't feel the little Elsie like I do my XD40 Subcompact carried in an IWB holster on my hip.
Does that make more sense?

  Thanks guys..

I have larger than average hands, and yes there was some pinching when I first shot my LCP. As I shot a couple hundred rounds of ammo to break-in the gun, and practiced with various defense rounds to see what Elsie and I preferred, I learned to shoot it without a problem.
On every trip to the range I always do some practice with my CCW firearms to keep "fresh" with them. The correct hold of the LCP has become more natural to me by now.
The bottom line with any CCW firearm is practice, practice, practice.
