Is 15 months fair and reasonable?
« on: February 08, 2011, 01:36:29 PM »
I paid 50% down and left my SC deer with a "reputable" taxidermist on 10/31/2009.  I called them twice a month after 10 months asking for the status.  I got the run around like I was bill collector.  I have been to the store, an 8-hour drive and 2-States away from FL, four times since the 12 month limit of my patience.

I got a call the beginning of February 2011 to inform me that the deer head was [FINALLY] ready -  a typical shoulder mount.  I had thought they had converted my deer to theirs by this time.  It certainly wasn't a State or National trophy.  Just a real nice deer for me.  I think that their "service", if you could call it that, is well beyond the limit of acceptable business practice.

Could it be they lost it and it took that long to raise another one, or for you to forget what yours looked like?

The local guy here tells people when they leave one for a mount, that he runs about a year behind.  He has a large walk in freezer just for that purpose.  Of course, he is one guy and he likes to hunt and fish as well.......... ;D

A year is standard for the guy I use.  It doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

10-12 months is pretty much to be expected. Cut him some slack and hope it's because he's doing well and makin' a decent living.

OMGosh, I'd frankly be pretty upset if it took more than 3 months.  If you do the math on refrigerating a carcass for 12 months, well, lets just say that in the South, a small walk in will probably add $25 to $40 per month or more to a guy's light bill.

That said, my nephew's fish took about 8 months.  The fish was OK, but not great, primarily because of freezer damage that had to be repaired.

I had made a $100 bet (with myself) that the FL deer shot on 11/06/2010 and delivered on 11/09/2010 to the local taxidermist would be back and on my wall BEFORE the 10/30/2009 deer from the SC taxidermist.  Yep, I "won" that bet.  My FL deer is now on the wall.  Received it yesterday afternoon and within 3-months start to finish.  That's what I thought I was paying for in SC.  Never again in SC that way.  Next time there will be a stated time limit within the deal.

Did you ask him if he was backlogged when you took it to him? 12-15 months isn't out of the question if he was behind when you dropped it off. If he wasn't behind and he just dragged his feet then I wouldn't use him again. I guess it all boils down to how much work he had.

I didn't ask the man and in that I am to blame for some of my own frustration.  I do not have a lot of experience with a taxidermist, but I am learning the hard way very fast.  Mounting game is few and far between in the animals I have had the opportunity to take to a taxidermist.

Most established taxidermists around here will tell you a year. Then if they get it done in 10 months the customer is happy.

15 months is a little on the long side but if you are happy with the work forget the extra time required.  Better a good job that ran a little long then a rush job that isn't good.  They could have communicated better that's for sure.

The two guys I have used both say about a year . They flesh the hide and send it out. They both do alot of deer and both take return customers first and fill up fast. So far both have gotten deer back in about 8-10 mos. but still say a year. Maybe being out of state was something they didn't like .

Post the company no need to support them.

You did better then I. My black bear got "lost"
As this particular taxidermist had a number of foreign hunters and tourists as clients I have the distinct feeling my bear ended up overseas. :(

I picked up the 2009 deer yesterday.  I drove to SC and back from E. Central FL.  It was one of three things in Union that I needed to retrieve, so the trip was not necessarily for the deer head alone.  I had sent the money for the final taxidermy payment in late January 2011 to a friend there who picked up the deer from American Outdoorsmen in Laurens, SC.

The only criticisms I have are the eyes used were not the coal black ones as are my other mounts from other taxidermists (I had not thought to ask for coal black eyes), but are the multi-colored brown with black slit colored and the skin just below each eye is torn from drying within the cape after it was mounted.  There is about a 3/16" long by 1/64" wide crack under each eye, that with just the right dab of paint in the correct color should make them disappear completely.  Otherwise, it looks to be a well prepared cape and mount.  I had asked for wet tanning.  The hide seems, to this unaided eye, to be well prepared but that doesn't mean that I would know whether it was, in fact, wet tanned.

Not being a horn hunter, I have never really wanted but one mount. I killed the biggest bobcat I had ever seen, and took it to Durant Ok for the mounting. He did a good job, but took the better part of a year. Would I do it again. Hell no. I'll keep the $350.00, and take pictures. I'm a little tired of lookin at the cat, and he seems tired of lookin at me. Oh well. We're stuck with each other I guess.

Would you part with it for the shipping fee?  I would be very happy to take it off of your hands Dee.  I would enjoy a full cat mount.  I have quite a few other mounts, not all of them are deer.  Some are ducks and turkeys.  Predators are very nice to display.

This one is staring down at me from atop my book shelves at the present. For several years it stood in front of the fireplace in the living room, as my wife confiscated it upon arrival. It is a big good-lookin lanky Tomcat, and I doubt my wife would allow that, but I'll ask.

I realize this is an old post but I want to clarify some things from a taxidermists point of view.  I personally tell people ahead of time that deer heads are usually have a 10-12 month turn around.  It is also stated on the contract that thgey sign before leaving the shop.  If it is going to be longer than my stated time I will call and let the client know  what is going on with it.  To me 15 months is a bit long without some explanation.
OMGosh, I'd frankly be pretty upset if it took more than 3 months.  If you do the math on refrigerating a carcass for 12 months, well, lets just say that in the South, a small walk in will probably add $25 to $40 per month or more to a guy's light bill.

As far as this quote 3 months would be very fast so the taxidermist probably is not busy or is just a hobbiest.  As a professional with most taxidermists the carcass is typically not frozen it is usually skinned out and the skin tanned and then refrozen until it comes time to work on that deer.  I have never had a problem with freezer damage due to long term storage.  The fish I mount whether 1 week or 3 years in the freezer look quite well when finished.  So that is not the fault of the frozen specimen it is just the fault of the artist doing the work.

I don’t think 12 to 18 months is out of the question. That’s about what my experience is over the years.

I just got a call last week from the taxidermist in Idaho about the elk mount he's doing for me. It will be 1 year next month and he has not even stretched it over the mold yet. So I’m thinking theres about 3 months to go.
