given the choice between the 2
« on: February 08, 2011, 03:24:14 PM »
given the choice between a new marlin 1894 in .357 magnum or buying a older non-cross bolt model like new , which would any of you choose that may have had and shot both ?

i've found 2 pre cross bolt safety models ,used but like new but there price is about what i can buy a new one for .

same question goes for 1894 in .44 magnum as i'm interested there as well.

Supply and demand, sucks unless yer the one selling.  Do you want smooth wood or do you want checkering, do you want to use the cross-bolt safety or will you only use the half cock safety feature?  Handle both, the older one will have a thinner forearm than a new one, which feels better?  All up to you, with either one you will be pleased.  DP

The cross bolt safety doesn't make a bit of difference to me, I just don't use it. Buy the rifle you think you will be most compfordable with, it's a personal prefernce thing.

i've handled both , prefer the older model but have not shot either . theres a difference in the rifling between the two which is why i'd like to know if any have shot both which they liked better .

An 1894C and 1894 in 44 live here, love them both. They both have the cross
bolt safety. I like it that way, safer to unload if you don't find anything to shoot.

When ever possible, mine get unloaded by using the trigger. ;D  They are just FUN to shoot. ;)  DP

Unloading with the trigger is more desirable but I feel like I sometimes
belong to the no-see-um club and hate to waste ammo.

I use my cross bolt safety for unloading, and feel better that it's on my daughter's gun.  Hear Ballard rifling does better with lead bullets, and pistol calibers.  Had trouble with micro-groove until I got .002 oversize lead cast.  Otherwise, my old gun feels smoother because it's been used more, and my new one is 'rougher' but shoots fine.

As said, your choice.  Which one 'speaks' to you... I always know.
