Waitin for Ice for beaver
« on: December 19, 2003, 10:35:44 AM »
Nature sure has been cruel here this season.Last year I was setting for beaver at midnight when the season opened.(Dec.1)I haven't been able to walk on the ice here yet, slow start, finally iceing over, then over a foot of snow, then it rained, over an inch, warmed for a couple days, snowed again.Sigh.I just wanna go trappin without swimmin.Too much ice to trap open water, not enough to trap below ice.ARGHHHHH!!!!!!! I did take a couple from up the road at a culvert.that helped for a day or two....Ah well...what can ya do.....L.H.

L.H.,ran into the same condions last week.A foot of snow on top of bad ice made for treacherous conditons.I probably broke through about 20 times that week. The morning it was -6 ,I still broke through.I wear waders when on the ice ,just for that reason.Luckily the deepest water I found was only top of the waders deep.Goin through sure gets the heart rate up.   Tom

It sure does.....I pulled gear just before the last storm and haven't put any back out. Most of my flowages were in REAL deep water,I'd no desire to push it.Plus last year I had an apprentice with me,this year I am hoofin it alone agin. They tagged an extra month on the end for us here in my zone this year so I guess It'll all work out. I started using snares last year a bit and had some limited sucess, enough to keep at it anyhow. They sure are easier to carry!

Dag Gone I wish I could find some beavers. Me and a buddy trapped two last year at a lodge I found behind my house in the river. After that a big flood came, washed everything out, and I haven't seen beaver activity there since. In fact I checked today. Nothing.

Some boys at school have been telling me where some are that I need to trap. With it being Christmas break and all I might give em a call. I am going to use this break for all it is worht and put some fur in the shed. I got off to a good start today by picking up a nice male yote. :-)

Well, good luck to all of you and may your stretchers be full.
